How You'll Help Transform Healthcare:The Advanced Practice Provider ( NP/PA) is a member of a collaborative health care team whose advanced knowledge and skills qualify her/him to function as a primary health care provider. This collaborative role includes responsibility for determining the patient's health and medical status by taking a health history, performing physical exams, initiating screening and diagnostic procedures, providing health maintenance services, and management of pregnancy, minor trauma, acute illnesses, and stable chronic illness.

The Physician Assistant " EVH is a surgical first assist provides billable surgical first assist services. They have additional specialized training in endoscopic vein harvesting. They spend a minimum of 40% of work time providing surgical assist services. The rest of the time is spent working with patients doing pre-surgical assessments, rounding post surgery and providing post surgical assessment and care. This role includes responsibility for identifying the patient's health status through taking of health histories; performing physical examinations; initiating screening and diagnostic procedures; management of minor trauma and acute health problems; health maintenance and clinical management of stable or chronically ill patients. May see a large volume of patients per workday.

  • Assists the surgeon in the preoperative care and workup of patients to include outpatient and inpatient consultations, emergency room evaluations, and follow-up visits. Explains necessity, preparation, nature and the anticipated effect of surgical procedure to a patient. Obtains comprehensive health history.
  • Discriminates between normal and abnormal physical, psychological and developmental findings and appropriately determines when to consult and/or refer the patient to other members of the health care team.
  • Performs or requests laboratory/radiology procedures and screening tests. Analyzes and interprets these and other health data.
  • Assesses, diagnoses, and manages selected acute and chronic illnesses and conditions.
  • Able to utilize automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
  • Administers medications and injections as needed. Performs AHA BLS-HCP and ACLS and/or assist medical staff with acute resuscitation efforts as situation arises.
  • Coordinates necessary appointments and referrals, including hospital admissions and/or the use of community resources, as the patient's health status dictates.
  • Consults with physician, as appropriate, keeping physician informed of needs and problems related to patient care.
  • Provides patient/family education needs are identified in a timely manner. Teaches, discusses and plans with patient and family for continued health management.
  • Discharges including discharge teaching as necessary, dictation of discharge summaries and related correspondence, completion of insurance forms, arrange outpatient follow-up consultations.
  • Prepares patients for surgery, including education, positioning, skin preparation and administration of local anesthetic, and preparation of equipment
  • Functions as first or second assistant in the operating room including performing surgical exposure, surgical dissections, layer closure of wounds, harvesting of autologous graft materials, application of immobilization devices.
  • Assists with use of monitoring devices, including radiographic equipment.
  • Completes individual daily rounds on all inpatients and documentation of medical plan.
  • Conducts procedures (under direction and appropriate level of supervision of the Attending Physician), including but not limited to: placement of indwelling lines and catheters , placement of skeletal hardware, management of closed fractures, aspiration/injection of bursae, joints, tenosynovia, anatomic compartments, cysts, insertion of Foley catheters, venipuncture, arterial blood gas sampling, and insertion of IV lines.
  • In Cardiac area: Performs endoscopic vein harvesting procedures upon physician request.
What We Require:

Education:Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program required.

Experience:Clinical experience appropriate to specific practice/ department preferred.

Licensure/Certification:Current Physician Assistants license (PA) required. DEA licensure required. AHA BLS-HCP certification required. Advanced life support is preferred and is required for those who may use a defibrillator in their practice.

Other:Meets credentialing requirements. Qualifies for malpractice insurance and is accepted by Carilion Clinics malpractice insurance carrier. Ability to work collaboratively with physicians and other health care providers. Maintains open and supportive communications between all department members and other employees, patients and their family members. Commitment to continued professional development.
