General Description

In collaboration with the Medical Director of Outreach and Business Development and the Chief Administrator of the Department of Pathology, the Administrative Director will lead the creation, implementation, and management of the outreach service line for Duke Pathology and Clinical Laboratories.


Duties and Responsibilities
Financial Performance

  • Develop and achieve financial performance targets through revenue enhancement and cost containment strategies.
  • Maintain current service volumes and actively pursue new service offerings to increase volume.
  • Participate in third-party negotiations and oversee variable expenses, capital purchases, and outcomes management.
  • Recommend financial targets, prepare budgets, monitor financial variances, and implement corrective actions as needed.


Quality of Care

  • Ensure quality care standards are met through the hospital's quality assurance program.
  • Develop and implement outcomes management and performance targets, including patient satisfaction surveys, physician relations, and continuing education.
  • Monitor quality variances and implement corrective actions.


Market Strategy and Development

  • Monitor market conditions and costs to recommend competitive pricing and service packaging.
  • Collaborate with marketing and communications teams to develop promotional programs.
  • Design and recommend service line extensions.
  • Work with Health Systems representatives to develop and negotiate managed care contracts.
  • Partner with Medical Staff Services to enhance physician relations and recruitment.
  • Analyze market forces and internal conditions to develop and update the Business Plan.
  • Align service line goals with hospital objectives and strengthen key partnerships.


Resource Management

  • Monitor resource utilization in service delivery to ensure appropriateness and efficiency.
  • Enhance patient care delivery effectiveness and satisfaction.
  • Recommend care improvements and coordinate implementation of redesigns as necessary.


Operational Coordination

  • Identify and communicate service line needs.
  • Coordinate with clinical and non-clinical departments to develop supplier contracts.
  • Participate in the Service Line Performance Team.


Personnel Management

  • Supervise and coordinate the work of designated employees, including departmental staff and divisional business management personnel.
  • Manage personnel activities to align with University and departmental goals in training, equal employment opportunity, compensation, and wage administration.
  • Provide guidance on employment terms as appropriate.


Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described above.


Required Qualifications at this Level
Education

Bachelor's degree required.


Experience

Minimum of seven years of progressive administrative experience, preferably in a hospital, healthcare, or similar service industry.

A Master's degree in Hospital Administration, Business Administration, or a related field may substitute for experience on a 1:1 basis.
