The Arizona Astrobiology Center (in UASI), with the University of Arizona, seeks a Research Programs Coordinator. The Arizona Astrobiology Center (AABC) is dedicated to advancing the understanding and exploration of life in the universe through interdisciplinary research, education, and public outreach to all communities and across many disciplines. Our mission necessitates the involvement and integration of fields of astronomy, planetary sciences, biological sciences, humanities, social sciences, arts, and more to explore the origins, evolution, distribution, and future of life on Earth and beyond.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced individual to join our team as the Research Coordinator for the Arizona Astrobiology Center. This position offers a unique opportunity to advance research and play a central role in supporting undergraduate research experiences. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in Astrobiology, along with demonstrated experience developing and managing research initiatives, mentoring students, and coordinating academic programs that engage undergraduates.

This is an Extended Temporary Employment (ETE) position.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and support the development of research projects with faculty, researchers, and external partners.
  • Oversee the coordination and execution of undergraduate academic programs related to Astrobiology, including research experiences, workshops, seminars, and conferences.
  • Seek and develop research proposals, ensuring compliance with regulations and guidelines, including managing budgets, resources, and timelines for research and academic partnership initiatives.
  • Foster interdisciplinary collaborations and partnerships within the institution and with external organizations to enhance research endeavors.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of research findings through publications, presentations, and outreach activities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge:

  • Understanding of Astrobiology and related fields (natural sciences, biological sciences, physical sciences).
  • Knowledge of research methodologies, project design, and implementation in academic/research contexts. Knowledge of academic program development (undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral levels).
  • Awareness of emerging trends in Astrobiology and related interdisciplinary research.
  • Knowledge of science communication practices, including publications, presentations, and outreach.

Skills:

  • Grant writing and management: Proven ability to write successful proposals, secure funding, and oversee reporting and compliance.
  • Research project coordination: Skilled in planning, organizing, and executing multi-partner projects.
  • Program management: Ability to design and oversee workshops, conferences, and student research experiences.
    Interpersonal and collaboration skills: Ability to build and maintain strong partnerships with faculty, students, and external organizations.
  • Communication skills: Strong written, oral, and presentation skills for multiple audiences (academic, public, funding agencies).
  • Leadership and organizational skills: Capacity to manage teams, foster collaboration, and align efforts with strategic goals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience in disseminating research findings through publications and presentations.

  • Ability to foster interdisciplinary collaborations across departments and institutions.
  • Ability to translate complex scientific concepts into accessible formats for students, educators, and the public.
  • Ability to identify research opportunities and align them with institutional priorities.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional-level experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Astrobiology-aligned Research Experience: Minimum of two years of research experience in natural sciences, biological/natural sciences, or related field, PhD preferred.
  • Interest, passion, and experience in Astrobiology and/or parallel fields demonstrated through work experience, publications, education, or a combination.
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate students in research, supporting skill development, project execution, and professional growth.
  • Project Coordination: Experience designing, managing, and conducting research projects, preferably within an academic or research institution.
