The Senior Estimator is responsible for preparing and submitting bids, cost estimates and proposals. This position will lead the bid process from initial review through final proposal, collaborating closely with internal teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and clients. The Senior Estimator will analyze project documents, assess risk, and produce detailed cost estimates to support strategic bidding and successful project delivery. Key Duties and Responsibilities
Develop and execute strategies to win work, including implementing cost-saving methods across purchasing, subcontracting, and labor management. Develop and refinea robust estimating framework, including cost databases and templates, to support consistent and competitive project proposals. Analyze all trades estimates and determine best cost estimate for project conditions. Review and interpret drawings, specifications, geotechnical data, and other documentation, identifying scope, constraints, and opportunities. Develop clear, complete cost estimates including materials, labor, equipment, trucking, crew production rates, and geotechnical considerations. Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and operations teams to ensure estimates align with field means and methods. Analyze subcontractor and supplier quotes, validate pricing, and determine the best value options for each project. Identify project risks and develop mitigation strategies for soil conditions, groundwater, weather, schedule, logistics, and phasing. Lead or attend pre-bid meetings, site walks, and scope reviews with clients, engineers, and subcontractors Support bid strategy efforts, including value engineering, alternate approaches, and cost-saving opportunities. Coordinate final handoff and turnover meetings to ensure proper transition to the project team after award. Build and maintain relationships with vendors, subcontractors, and industry partners. Lead by example, integrity and honesty to promote and maintain a positive work environment. Maintain confidentiality with respect to sensitive items and information. Perform additional duties assigned to support the success of the estimating department and project teams.
Experience, Education & Skills
7 years of proven heavy civil construction experience as an estimator leading bids. 5 years of experience working with earthwork, stormwater and wet utilities. Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management or equivalent work experience. Demonstrated experience for bidding large and complex heavy civil projects. Proficient in HCSS Heavy Bid, Bluebeam and MS Office Software. Experience in P6 and AGTEK is preferred but not required. Proficiency in estimating mass earthwork (site grading, highways, mining, airports, dams, rock) and underground wet utilities (storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water, and related structures). Demonstrated knowledge of large earthmoving equipment, including means and methods. Demonstrated knowledge of other heavy civil trade scopes and pricing, including specialty subcontractors. Strong interpersonal skills to interface with owner representatives, engineering firms, subcontractors, other team members and senior management. Strong analytic skills and financial analysis skills Proficiency in use of computer software applications including MS Office, HCSS Heavy Bid, Bluebeam and MS Office Software. Knowledgeable in P6 and AGTEK preferred but not required.
Working Conditions
Location: This position is an onsite position based located in Aurora, CO. Work Schedule: M-F, 7am to 5pm. Travel -Some travel will be required to project locations and area offices. Construction Site Environment - physical ability to stand, walk, crawl, bend, reach and climb. Exposed to high noise levels. - Office Environment - extensive sitting at desk and computer; some standing, bending at the waist, stooping and reaching required; ability to lift 5-20 pounds occasionally.
The starting salary range for this position is $115,000-$150,000. Salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location.
