Position Highlights
The Lunar Environmental Monitoring Station (LEMS) is a NASA-led initiative focused on developing seismic sensors for deployment at the lunar south pole. As part of this project, the TVAC Research Technician plays a critical role in supporting second and third-shift operations, overseeing thermal-vacuum (TVAC) testing of flight and test hardware. This position ensures stable environmental conditions, accurate data collection, and adherence to lab protocols. Responsibilities include first-level troubleshooting, documenting shift activities and anomalies, recommending process improvements, and mentoring junior technicians as needed.

This role requires flexibility to support second and third-shift operations, depending on project needs and team schedules.

This is a Temporary Employment position.

Duties & Responsibilities

Thermal-vacuum test monitoring & execution:

  • Monitor overnight TVAC campaigns: verify environmental setpoints (temperature and pressure), observe telemetry and data acquisition systems, execute scripted command sequences and pre-approved procedures, and implement documented contingency actions.
  • Prepare concise shift handovers and immediate status updates for daytime engineering staff.

Pre-test verification, setup support & first-level troubleshooting:

  • Perform pre-test checklists (harnessing, seals, heater/thermistor hookups), assist with chamber loading and unloading under supervision, and perform first-line diagnostics (power cycles, connector checks, log reviews) to stabilize operations.
  • Escalate unresolved issues to on-call senior engineers and document corrective actions.

Data integrity checks, anomaly reporting & documentation:

  • Maintain precise, timestamped operator logs and electronic test records; perform basic data-validity checks; compile anomaly reports and shift summaries that support engineering troubleshooting and decision making; ensure files and data are saved and backed up per project standards.

Contamination control, lab maintenance & safety compliance:

  • Maintain chamber cleanliness and FOD control, follow lab cleanliness protocols, perform authorized consumable changes, conduct routine safety inspections, and comply with Lockout/Tagout and chemical-handling procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Skills in troubleshooting mechanical and plumbing systems; performing basic diagnostics (power-cycle, leak checks, line/cable inspections) and executing documented corrective steps to maintain systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow strict, safety-critical written procedures; maintain clear, time-stamped operator logs; and communicate concise shift handovers both verbally and in writing; prior laboratory experience with good-laboratory-practice (GLP) awareness.

Physical Requirements and Environmental Demands:

  • Ability to lift/move hardware (up to ~30 lb.), climb ladders, and perform hands-on work.
  • Noise: There is sufficient noise to cause you to shout in order to be heard above the noise level.
