Senior Vice President, Planning, Design and Construction

Job Overview:

The Senior Vice President (SVP) of Planning, Design and Construction is responsible for leading the strategic visioning, design, and delivery of all major capital construction projects across the health system. This role oversees master facility planning, architectural and engineering design, and the execution of complex construction projects from concept through occupancy. The SVP will ensure that projects align with the organization's mission, clinical priorities, and financial objectives while fostering innovation, efficiency, and collaboration.

Reports to:

  • The Senior Vice President (SVP) of Planning, Design and Construction reports directly to the Executive Vice President of Facilities Management and Real Estate Development, RWJBarnabas Health.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 20 years of progressively responsible experience in managing large-scale, complex construction projects, ideally in healthcare or similarly regulated industries.
  • Proven track record of leading projects exceeding $500 million in capital value.
  • Strong background in both planning/design and construction management, with the ability to bridge vision and execution.
  • Experience working with or for large construction management firms, architectural practices, or owner's representative organizations preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead diverse teams and collaborate with senior executives, clinicians, regulators, and community stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
  • Deep understanding of regulatory approvals, permitting, and healthcare construction requirements.

Essential Functions:

  • Strategic Leadership
    • Provide executive oversight for planning, design, and construction functions across the health system's capital portfolio.
    • Develop long-term facility strategies in coordination with executive leadership, clinical leadership, and community stakeholders.
    • Drive innovation in healthcare design to support patient experience, operational efficiency, and future growth.
  • Planning and Design
    • Lead master planning efforts and ensure facility plans align with strategic goals.
    • Oversee design development and ensure projects meet functional, aesthetic, and sustainability standards.
    • Evaluate constructability, budget adherence, and schedule feasibility during design phases.
  • Construction and Project Delivery
    • Provide executive oversight of all major construction projects, ensuring delivery on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
    • Establish project governance, reporting structures, and risk management processes.
    • Lead relationships with construction managers, architects, engineers, and external partners.
  • Team and Organizational Development
    • Mentor and develop a high-performing team of planning, design, and construction professionals.
    • Foster collaboration between Planning and Design and Project Delivery groups, ensuring seamless handoffs and integration.
    • Represent the department to senior leadership, the Board, and external stakeholders.
