This is an exciting opportunity to join the UW-Madison Department of Curriculum & Instruction as a teaching faculty member in an innovative, joint ESL/Secondary Master's program for teacher certification. The Department of Curriculum & Instruction is home to several research-based teacher certification programs. These programs are designed around practice-based field experiences in which students observe, assist, and teach in both classrooms and out-of-school educational programs as they work toward earning their initial educator licenses. We are seeking a teaching faculty colleague who will contribute to teacher education in social studies, while also providing leadership in field coordination, recruitment, and program development within the broader secondary teacher education program.

The role involves teaching social studies education courses within the content pedagogical series and leading fieldwork coordination, including supervising teacher candidates and mentoring university supervisors. Responsibilities also include supporting recruitment, admissions, and advising to foster a diverse candidate pool, cultivating partnerships with cooperating teachers and schools, and overseeing candidate progress from admission to certification. Additionally, the position requires leadership in program planning and collaboration across content areas to enhance the secondary teacher education program.

Potential duties may include contributing to ESL course facilitation and field supervision, teaching additional assigned courses, supporting program administration through tasks like scholarship selection and data reporting, and participating in departmental initiatives aimed at strengthening teacher education across disciplines.

This position is a 75-100% FTE position.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Supervises the day-to-day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed
  • Works with faculty to identify and develop new methods of advancing instruction in the discipline
  • Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
  • Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
  • Assists in development of grant proposals for funding of model instruction programs
  • Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
  • Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and may train other staff in use of these techniques
  • May make presentations to faculty and to staff members on instructional programs and techniques

Compensation:

Minimum: $78,000.00 annually

Commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position is a 75-100% FTE position.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of three years' experience teaching social studies at the secondary level (grades 4-12).

  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, written and oral communication skills, and an exceptional record of classroom instruction.

  • A strong commitment to recognizing and valuing the strengths and experiences of all learners, and to using research-informed teaching practices that support meaningful and effective learning for every student, is required


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience and expertise in teacher education at the university level, teacher coaching, mentoring, or professional learning.

  • Certification and experience in working with English Language Learners, including curricular innovation in ESL methods, that can further enhance our secondary teacher certification program.


Education:

  • Master's degree in social studies education or similar area is required with extensive experience in 4-12 teaching and/or teacher education

  • Ph.D or ABD is preferred
