Position Highlights The University of Arizona's Steward Observatory invites you to apply to the role of Technician, Integration. This position provides technical labor to implement the unique tooling required for each Mirror Lab project, support for the maintenance and configuration of specialized production equipment used in mirror production, and is the primary contact for Facilities Maintenance.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Manufacture assemblies from provided engineering concepts and designs. This may include purchasing of raw materials and fabrication of components using hand tools. Existing assemblies, from a remote storage location, are often reused or modified. Travel to local storage locations and material suppliers is often required.
  • Configure mirror production equipment, including grinding and polishing machines, to support mirror production. Configuration includes assembly and installation of custom mirror mount interfaces, installation of grinding and polishing tools, and construction and installation of safety devices and structures.
  • Assembly/Dis-assembly of test tower assemblies and metrology systems. Each mirror project typically requires a custom configuration of the four-story test tower involving removal and installation of assemblies requiring the use of cranes and lifts. Safety harness training and use is often required for work at heights on the tower. Perform minor facilities maintenance and support Facilities and Maintenance (FM) for larger tasks. Support includes identification of maintenance issues, documenting and reporting to FM, escort and assist FM personnel when they are in the Mirror Lab facility.
  • Assembly of large weldments used for mirror polishing cells. The final assemblies include assembled weldments, mirror interface actuators along with control and monitoring electronics. Occasional travel for telescope support.

  • Ability to read calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, and other measuring tools
  • Ability to use handheld power tools
  • Ability to write and follow procedures
  • Carpentry skills
  • Basic electrical skills
  • Ability to work at heights
  • Ability to communicate with scientists and engineers
  • Ability to work in both team and individual settings
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and schematics
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Basic knowledge of shop tools
  • Ability to follow safety protocols
  • Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to
    the University Fleet Safety Policy.

Physical Abilities:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs

Minimum Qualifications
  • Federal regulations for this project require that the incumbent be a
    U.S. citizen.
  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with the use of shop and carpentry tools
  • Experience maintaining and modifying large equipment
  • Optics handling experience
  • Certifications for boom lift, scissor lift, forklift, Pap-R, confined spaces
  • Technical school training
