About the role

Are you ready to lead transformative Payments initiatives at a global scale? Western Union is seeking a Director, Payments Project Management with deep expertise in payments technology, particularly in funds-in operations. This role is ideal for a strategic leader who understands the complexities of digital and traditional payment rails, regulatory compliance, and the technical infrastructure that powers global money movement.

As a leader of the PMO, you will oversee the planning, execution, and governance of programs focused on funds-in capabilities-including card processing, bank transfers, wallets, and alternative payment methods. You'll align these initiatives with business strategy, optimize resource allocation, and ensure delivery excellence across a global portfolio. This role requires close collaboration with product, engineering, compliance, and operations teams to drive innovation and efficiency in how customers fund their transactions.

As a leader of the Program Management Office (PMO), you will be responsible for overseeing the planning, execution, and governance of all Technology projects and programs within our organization. This pivotal role involves aligning data initiatives with strategic objectives, optimizing resource allocation for data projects, and ensuring successful delivery within scope and budget.

This role will help regional and product business leaders make informed decisions based on data-driven insights about which investments to pursue, continue, modify, or terminate. It involves assessing the performance, cost, and risks associated with each component of the Technology portfolio, as well as considering factors like business value, return on investment from data initiatives, and potential synergies among different data projects. You will manage a global team of Project and Program Managers, ensuring their Technology projects are successfully delivered on time and within budget.



  • Mentor and develop a global team of project and program managers with a focus on payments domain knowledge and delivery excellence.
  • Provide executive-level updates on the status of payments programs, highlighting key metrics such as authorization rates, funding success, and latency.
  • Champion continuous improvement in payment technology delivery processes, leveraging agile methodologies and data-driven decision-making.
  • Identify and mitigate risks related to payment processing, transaction integrity, fraud prevention, and system scalability.
  • Oversee the successful delivery of payment-related projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and meet quality standards.
  • Drive PI planning and roadmap execution for initiatives involving payment gateways, acquiring banks, digital wallets, and real-time payment networks.
  • Partner with product, engineering, and compliance teams to deliver scalable, secure, and efficient payment solutions across multiple geographies.
  • Lead the execution of technology programs focused on funds-in payment capabilities, ensuring alignment with business goals and regulatory requirements.


Role responsibilities



  • Proficiency of Microsoft Office/Google products including Word, Excel, Outlook, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, and familiarity with payments analytics tools such as Power BI or Tableau.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and occasionally deviate from established practices and procedures for new situations and problems related to payments quality, integration, and analysis.
  • Ability to motivate and influence others to embrace payments-focused decision-making and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short and long-range goals, establish priorities, and organize resources within the payments Technology landscape.
  • Strategic planning and organizational development knowledge and skills, with a focus on integrating payments Technology into broader business strategies.
  • Self-starter/leader who can anticipate department needs in a proactive manner regarding payments acquisition, analysis, and deployment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with individuals at all different levels in the organization on payments-related projects.
  • Superior leadership, coaching, and mentoring skills, including the ability to lead a high-performing payments Technology team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at a technical or non-technical level, depending on the audience, concerning payments infrastructure and strategic implications.
  • Outstanding facilitation and communication skills, including the ability to inspire others towards payments-centric goals.
  • Experience in analyzing payments data and using this data for process and program improvements and to inform payments strategy.
  • An analytical mindset with great problem-solving abilities, particularly in identifying and resolving payments-related challenges.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills, with proven ability to build and lead high-performing payments-focused Technology teams.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, particularly in translating complex payment technology concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Outstanding knowledge of payment processing, reporting, budgeting for payment projects, and the payments technology lifecycle.
  • Excellent knowledge of performance evaluation techniques and key metrics for payments initiatives.
  • Strong technical understanding of payment infrastructure, transaction flows, and integration with financial systems.
  • Certification PMI-PMP, PMI-ACP, SAFe, or other relevant Technology certifications will be a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional teams in the delivery of payment technology solutions across multiple geographies.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the payments domain, with a strong understanding of funds-in operations, payment gateways, acquiring banks, and digital wallets.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, plus 15+ years of progressive management experience, including large-scale project management and personnel management.

Salary

The base salary range is $175,000 - $190,000 USD per year, total on target compensation includes a base salary plus long-term and short-term incentives that align with individual and company performance.
