International Student and Scholar Services

Job Description

This position will serve as an International Student Advisor in the Office of International Student and Scholar Services. As an International Student Advisor, this position will serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) responsible for ensuring the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of immigration documents issued to prospective and current international students and scholars. This position advises students and scholars on maintaining lawful nonimmigrant status and supports the overall success and integration of the international community on campus.

Key Responsibilities

Immigration Advising and Compliance-

  • Advise prospective and current international students, scholars, and campus partners on obtaining and maintaining F-1 student and J-1 exchange visitor visa status, including issues related to employment, enrollment, and regulatory compliance
  • Prepare and maintain immigration records through the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) database
  • Stay informed of U.S. federal regulations affecting international students and scholars and ensure institutional compliance
  • Communicate updates on immigration regulations, requirements, and cross-cultural issues to students, scholars, and campus stakeholders
  • Advocate for international students and scholars within the university and the broader community
  • Support programming efforts that promote cross-cultural understanding and integration into campus and community life
  • Provide backup support to other international advisors as needed

Faculty and Academic Liaison-

  • Collaborate with faculty and departments on matters related to international students and scholars, including reduced enrollment, program completion, extensions, and funding or assistantship awards
  • Offer accurate and timely immigration guidance to academic advisors and departmental staff to support compliance and student success

Administrative Support-

  • Assist in the development and implementation of new procedures, programs, and initiatives that enhance international student and scholar services

Campus and Community Engagement-

  • Represent the Office of International Student and Scholar Services on committees and at meetings impacting international students and scholars
  • Participate in student group meetings, campus events, and community programs to foster engagement and support

Additional Responsibilities-

  • Provide support for international student programs, events, and orientation activities
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with international student advising, SEVIS, and related technologies (e.g. Terra Dotta and Slate)
  • Experience working with international students and scholars
  • Experience living, studying, or working abroad
  • An ability to understand and demonstrate complex rules and policies related to compliance
  • An ability to interpret and provide guidance to students or others related to regulations ensuring accurate documentation
  • Shown ability to advise individuals who require varying levels of support across a broad variety of topics
  • Demonstrate problem-solving skills and self-motivation
  • Use of key software database systems to ensure efficiency and compliance for record management, data entry, etc.
Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $18.87 to $20.00 hourly.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
