IT027 Principal Data Scientist
ADNET Systems is looking for a Principal Data Scientist, to work under the Computational and Information Sciences and Technology Office (CISTO) at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD. The position will be available starting as soon as possible - salary to commensurate with experience.
Key Responsibilities and Work Experiences:
- Extensive experience fine-tuning foundation models such as Prithvi, GenCast, and FourCastNet for weather and climate prediction tasks
- Expertise in preprocessing ML-ready weather datasets, including reanalysis data, satellite observations, and NWP model outputs
- Skilled in weather forecasting evaluation and analysis, including metrics like RMSE, CRPS, ACC, and reliability diagrams
- Proficient in building data pipelines for large-scale geospatial and temporal data using tools such as Xarray, Zarr, and Dask
- Strong understanding of numerical weather prediction (NWP) systems and their integration with deep learning workflows
- Experience applying deep learning architectures (e.g., graph neural networks, transformers, CNNs) to spatiotemporal forecasting problems
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and visualize model outputs using advanced geospatial libraries (Matplotlib, Cartopy, Plotly, Holoviews)
- Experience working with cloud-native data formats and cloud computing environments (e.g., AWS)
- Proven track record of collaborating with atmospheric scientists, modelers, and software engineers on cross-disciplinary AI projects
Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Data Science, Computer Science, Atmospheric Science, Remote Sensing, Applied Mathematics, or a related quantitative field
- 10+ years of professional experience applying data science and machine learning to complex, real-world problems, ideally in scientific or geospatial domains
- Deep expertise in developing and deploying machine learning models (including deep learning, ensemble methods, and probabilistic models) for structured, unstructured, or spatiotemporal data
- Self-motivated professional who thrives with minimal oversight while actively contributing to team success
- Strong problem-solving skills with ability to deliver innovative, high-quality solutions efficiently
- Clear and effective communication with ability to create useful technical documentation
- US Citizenship required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Tier 1 Investigation through NASA.
