The mission of the Student Health & Well-Being (SHW) cluster is to promote a culture of health and well-being for the student community, deliver equitable high quality innovative services, incorporate inclusive approaches, and celebrate diversity, with the goal of adoption and maintenance of healthy behaviors contributing to the academic success and personal development of all students.

The UC San Diego SHW cluster, which reports through UC San Diego Health System, plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes promotion and the transformation of existing departments, under the oversight of the Executive Director, into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Strategic Planning, Innovation and Research (SPIR), Student Health Analytics and Assessments (SHAA) and SHW Administration (ADM). SHW provides health promotion, counseling and psychological services and primary medical care, including urgent care and support services, to UC San Diego's undergraduate, graduate and professional students. Staff consists of physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, pharmacists, optometrists, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, radiology technologists, clinical laboratory scientists, medical lab assistants, medical assistants, health educators, administrative and other healthcare professionals.

The Gender Affirming Care Coordinator at UC San Diego supports transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The position leads and provides direct service to students in coordinating access to gender affirming care, supports and oversees a peer advocate program, and provides education, training and coordination across UC San Diego and UC San Diego Health.

Applies advanced concepts to provide counseling, clinical consultation and / or psychotherapy to clients. Develops and communicates treatment plans, provides therapeutic crisis intervention / management and emergency services as required. Uses advanced professional concepts and campus objectives to resolve highly complex issues. Regularly works on highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.

• Licensed in behavioral health counseling.

• Advanced knowledge and understanding of clinical counseling principles, methods, procedures, and standards. Advanced knowledge of a specific counseling domain.

• Skills associated with program development and implementation.

• Advanced ability to evaluate the progress of therapeutic approach and modify as necessary.

• Advanced ability to develop and present educational programs and / or workshops.

• Advanced problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

• Advanced knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to patients' rights.

• Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with a diverse client group. Proven ability to work effectively in teams and interact easily, collaboratively, and productively with colleagues, supervisors, and member's of the campus community, maintaining a positive and cooperative work environment and relationships.

• Advanced verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills. Excellent interpersonal skills in general, and specific to mental health consultation work, are required, including the ability to: develop strong working relationships; positively represent the transgender and nonbinary communities; and interact effectively with both health care professionals and non-professionals regarding mental health concerns. Ability to relate warmly, humanely, compassionately, and empathetically to others.

• Proven ability to provide case management services to diverse, intersecting transgender communities, including trans women, trans men, nonbinary and gender diverse students.

• Significant level of demonstrated cultural competency regarding all aspects of the BIPOC LGBTQIA+ communities.

• Extensive experience in working with women, females, femininities and people who align with femininity across trans, nonbinary and LGBQ+ identities, as well as those who have been socialized with femininity.

• Extensive experience in working with men, males, masculinities and people who align with masculinity across trans, nonbinary and LGBQ+ identities, as well as those who have been socialized with masculinity.

• Demonstrated experience in receiving feedback from, and subsequently changing behavior, regarding transgender, nonbinary and LGBQ+ communities, in relation to evolving language, experiences and needs of the LGBTQIA+ communities.

• Experience with complex relationship structures, including polyamory, queer platonic, asexuality, aromanticism and other diverse family and relationship concepts.

• Knowledge regarding sex, sexuality, sex positivity, and sexual health for LGBTQIA+ communities.

• Proven experience in honoring patients' lived gender identity and using the pronouns and terminology that the patient prefers.

• In-depth knowledge of health and social issues facing the trans and gender diverse community and familiarity with service and resources available.

• Knowledge of WPATH standards of care.

• Knowledge of student development theories to explain trans and gender diverse college student behavior, including psychosocial theories, cognitive/structural theories, and ecological and integrative theories.

• Knowledge of business software and specialized applications / systems used in behavioral health settings. Working knowledge of electronic medical/mental health records systems (EMR or EHR). Must be computer literate.

• Proven ability to develop and implement effective consultations, outreach programs, educational opportunities and trainings.

• Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality of client, students, faculty, and staff disclosures, and comply with all requirements in use of computer systems and access to any and all patient, student, employee and University data, in electronic and hard copy formats, in compliance with University, state and federal guidelines, including, but not limited to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act(HIPAA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of state and federal health care privacy laws, Title IX, VAWA, ADA, Title II, HIPAA and FERPA, as well as professional ethics or regulations that govern the work.

• Demonstrated ability to actively foster a positive, welcoming climate, and value, include and support all in the UC San Diego community.

• Demonstrated commitment to foster the best possible working and learning environment.

• Advanced verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence and persuade. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing, demonstrated by skills to record in a neat, orderly and logical manner, as well as to engage in a helpful, non-judgmental manner orally in person and by phone.

• Must complete all required training assigned by UCOP, UCSD, HPS and SHW on a timely basis.

• As appropriate, submit incident reports into the UCSD SHW Incident Report System, RL Datix or current system in use, to report near-misses, process problems or patient or employee injury events. Attend required trainings and refreshers for use and proper steps to follow.

• Ability to at all times adhere to UCSD Health Medical Center (C.A.R.I.N.G.) Standards of Performance, and demonstrate the characteristics of professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior and attentiveness to others. • Must successfully complete credential verification and re-credentialing every 3 years, in order to be granted practicing privileges.

• Completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) form is required, because this position is listed as a mandated reporter under CANRA.

• Occasionally required to work overtime, weekend or evening hours.

• TB screening required, following COEM schedule.
