Description

At Port Newark Container Terminal the Vice President Operations is responsible for the day to day operational decision making and execution in support of PNCT's overall primary objectives which principally consist of; Safe Operations, Efficient/Productive Operations, maximizing overall volume throughput.

Safe Operations is defined as PNCT maintaining an LTIFR Rate of 1.00 or below. Efficient Operations is defined as not exceeding budgeted cost/lift targets or a further reduction in cost/lift results vs. budgeted target. Maximization of overall throughput is defined on an annual basis as PNCT's financial volume target and consists of all daily/weekly decisions to help drive volume through PNCT including communications with carriers on Empty container returns, Ad-hoc vessel opportunities, gate/technology improvement etc...

Essential Duties:



  • Coordinate with Terminal Planning and Forecasting group on overall business objectives and acceptable operational limits on a daily/weekly basis.
  • Oversee terminal operations to ensure performance targets are met. This includes contractual performance, claims management, planning, and labor effectiveness.
  • Implement agreed operating and financial targets and monitor performance for business with respect to revenue, costs, profit, and organizational aspects.
  • Monitor local MTO terminal trends and local market for competitor position /strategy.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with customers, government agencies, industry associations and union officials.
  • Ensure that the appropriate materials and equipment are available to meet operational requirements, relaying any deficiency concerns to PNCT COO.
  • Ensure timely communications to the greater community of important announcements and developments at PNCT via Twitter, Text Messages, Port Authority Alerts, etc...
  • Monitor customer satisfaction and develop and implement strategies to minimize customer complaints.
  • In Conjunction with the COO, prepare and manage within annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Monitor employee performance and productivity, taking remedial action when required.
  • Ensure staff is adequately trained to perform tasks.
  • Consistently think pro-actively on employee development and succession planning within departments.
  • Represent the company on industry, collective bargaining and governmental policy setting bodies as directed by PNCT COO/CEO.
  • Ensure coordination between peer level leaders (Dir. LR, Dir. Contracts/Customer Service, Dir. Engineering, VP of IT)
  • Ensure implementation of corporate HR policies and procedures.
  • Requires the ability to obtain and maintain TWIC Card issued by the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Requirements (Education, Experience, Certifications):



  • Four (4) year college degree in Marine Operations, Operations Management, Business Administration, or related discipline.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Minimum ten (10) years of experience in port operational activities at the senior level. Knowledge of large multi- user terminal operations and experience in all aspects of stevedoring / terminal operations and equipment.
  • 8+ Years' experience with labor and contract negotiations within maritime industry
  • 8+ Years' experience with purchasing and working with cargo handling technology, gear, equipment.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:



  • Knowledge of large multi-user terminal operations and terminal TOS/financial systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of the applicable local and master contract collective bargaining agreements.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) to communicate with all levels of the organization, government agencies, customers, and prepare detailed reports, plans and contracts.
  • Customer development and marketing skills; Effective financial and administrative skills.
  • Ability to identify business opportunities, formulate proposals and contracts.
  • Proven Leadership and Organizational skills


Financial Responsibility:



  • >$90 Million Operational Expenses/Yr.

  • Yard/Gate Operations
  • Rail Operations
  • Planning Operations - Yard & Vessel


Working Conditions:



  • Travel - 10-20%
  • Work in an office environment
  • The ability to use a computer/keyboard, board vessels, climb equipment when necessary
  • Frequent sitting, standing, and walking
  • Exposed to environments such as Ports/Shipping Terminals that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast moving heavy equipment.

Compensation Range: $160-210k
