Job Overview

The Georgetown University Library's Maker Hub provides a creative gathering place connecting Georgetown researchers, makers, and entrepreneurs from across campus with specialized equipment and a collaborative atmosphere to design, solve problems, and innovate. The Maker Hub Manager charts the direction of the Maker Hub and oversees daily operations by coordinating instructional activities, supervising a team of student staff, and designing policies, procedures, and a community culture that ensures a safe, organized, and productive environment. This position provides support to individual students and interdisciplinary teams working on independent projects and course assignments. The Maker Hub Manager also collaborates with faculty to design course assignments that utilize the Maker Hub and enhance classroom-learning experiences through experiential learning. This position inspires discovery and experimentation, connecting Georgetown's art, technology, and business communities with new models of innovation in an environment where they can work together to solve problems and learn from each other. A critical aspect of this position involves collaboration with makers from all areas of the University, including academic units, student groups, and individual faculty, students, and staff.

Work Interactions

The Maker Hub Manager reports to the Head of the Digital Scholarship Services Unit. The Maker Hub Manager collaborates with other Digital Scholarship Services Unit staff to provide complementary services and support to the University community. The Maker Hub Manager interacts with students, faculty, and staff on a daily basis, providing one-on-one consultations, group workshops, and other specialized training. They recruit and supervise a community of student workers and volunteers that are trained to teach visitors how to use the equipment, promote a culture of hands-on learning, and ensure safe operation of the Maker Hub. They communicate and coordinate regularly with campus partners such as Georgetown Entrepreneurship, the Center for Social Justice, and the Red House, among many others as well as numerous academic departments and student groups. The Maker Hub Manager coordinates with vendors for the availability, acquisition, warranty, and/or repair of hardware and software to meet the needs of the University. They coordinate with faculty across campus on integrating Maker activities and perspectives into curriculum.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and at least 5-years of experience working in a Makerspace or organization that connects art, technology, and business communities
  • Portfolio of creatively fabricated projects that demonstrate expertise using a variety of tools
  • Experience with Google Suite and Microsoft Office Suite applications, especially Excel and Google sheets (to create and manage budgets and inventories)
  • Expertise, or ability to develop expertise, with all of the equipment offered in the Maker Hub, including 3D printers, laser cutters, sewing and embroidery machines, vinyl cutters, microcontrollers and electronics, woodworking tools, and bookbinding and printmaking tools
  • Evidence of experimentation with both traditional tools and emerging technologies
  • Demonstrated experience developing and leading new initiatives involving multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to work both independently and with a variety of teams
  • Exceptional customer service skills and the ability to teach both students and faculty
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to adjust to periods of increased workflow and varying responsibilities and ability to work in a complex, changing environment
  • Commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace, and ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, students, and staff

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$47,586.00 - $87,558.13

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
