The University of Virginia is built on a district energy model managed by Energy and Utilities within Facilities Management, with one main heat plant, three combined heating/cooling plants, nine chiller plants, hundreds of miles of piping distribution, and an internal medium voltage electrical distribution grid anchored by three 35kV to 13kV substations. E&U serves over 18 million gross square feet of learning, research, residential, and support space across a geographically dispersed 1175 acres. The University of Virginia's Facilities Management - Utilities Distribution team invites applications for an Operator/Pipe Layer or Senior Operator/Pipe Layer for Utility Systems. The incumbent will provide technical support, maintenance and perform installations on a variety of materials including carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, HDPE, PEX, RCP, Ductile Iron and PVC. To be considered for an Operator/Pipe Layer: Duties Include:
Repairs, maintains, and installs steam, condensate, heating hot water, chilled water, domestic water, storm, sanitary sewer, vents, plumbing fixtures, gas, and similar systems. Performs preventive maintenance checks, equipment inspections, and works around heavy equipment. Performs general work on equipment or systems in plants, steam tunnels, and the utility infrastructure. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and having a considerable understanding of various pipe distribution systems is essential. Anticipates job requirements and order materials. Completes all work to the drawing requirements. Demonstrated knowledge of plasma cutting, cutting torches, soldering and silver soldering, as well as rigging pipe and associated materials to successfully complete projects. Familiarity of area equipment and piping systems of all buildings. Notifies customers and supervisors of status of work and any complications, which will change the schedule. Provides technical guidance and training to others and inspects the quality of work. Maintains accurate records of work. Promotes responsibility and efficient work among team members by giving clear and descriptive instructions. Fosters a safe work environment by instructing and monitoring compliance of OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations. Responds to emergency calls and overtime requirements for various jobs. In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
In addition to the above, the Senior Operator/Pipe Layers duties would also include:

Advanced knowledge of plasma cutting, cutting torches, soldering and silver soldering, as well as rigging pipe and associated materials to successfully complete projects. Increased familiarity of area equipment and piping systems of all buildings. Ability to work with minimal guidance from the supervisor. In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications: To be considered for the Operator/Pipe Layer role:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent Experience: Four [4] years of experience of operating excavators, backhoes, skid steers, vacuum trucks experience required, with four years of experience in plumbing or mechanical trades required. Licensure: A CDL Licenseis required within twelve [12] months of the start date.A valid driver's license is required.
To be considered for the Senior Operator/Pipe Layer role:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent Experience: Seven [7] years of experience of operating excavators, backhoes, skid steers, vacuum trucks experience required, with seven years of experience in plumbing or mechanical trades required. Licensure: A CDL License is required within twelve [12] months of the start date.A valid driver's license is required.

Operator/Pipe Layer: Minimum salary starting at $27.00 ($56,160 annually); actual starting salary will be commensurate with experience. Senior Operator/Pipe Layer: Minimum salary starting at $32.00 ($66,560 annually); actual starting salary will be commensurate with experience. Physical Demands: Employee will be required to lift various weights, climb ladders and stairs in order to complete jobs. The use of both hands and a repetitive motion will be required while performing duties.
