The Flammability Technician processes incoming flame tests materials, develops flammability test plans, and reviews Engineering drawings and supporting documents for completeness and adherence to FAA regulatory requirements. In addition, this position coordinates outsourcing of flame testing articles; identifies and establishes Best Practices and preferred processes; and coordinates developing processes, monitoring process compliance and addressing material/process concerns with the Quality department.

Essential Job Functions

1. Processes incoming flame test materials to ensure that documentation is complete, there are an adequate number of test specimens, and that specimens are of correct dimensions. Reviews Engineering drawings and supporting documents for completeness and adherence to FAA regulatory requirements relative to Flammability Testing. Supports Engineering project teams by providing flammability certification documents.

2. Compiles data into the material data base, aircraft specific master material list, and customer certification package. Organizes work order folder, completes required work order squawk sheets, and processes and delivers material release tickets.

3. Develops flammability test plans, creates test article inspection forms, ensures test articles comply with test plan, and performs flammability testing. Performs flame testing as authorized. Prepares appropriate FAA forms and handles test failure notifications and paperwork.

4. Coordinates outsource testing resources, assembles outsource testing data packages, and processes and reviews incoming outsource test data.

5. Works with fellow team members and management to identify and establish Best Practices and preferred processes. Coordinates developing processes, monitoring process compliance and addressing material/process concerns with the Quality department.

6. Performs other duties as assigned by management.

Job Specific Requirements



  • Licenses/Certificates: Eligibility for ODA Unit Member (Airworthiness or Engineering) within 3 years of position appointment; Airframe & Powerplant Certificate or Repairman Certificate preferred
  • Attendance: Regularly scheduled attendance required
  • Physical: Routinely lifts up to 25 lbs.; reads small print; repetitive motion; heights above four feet; tolerates standing, walking, climbing and sitting
  • Environmental: N/A


Education and Experience



  • Associates degree in related field of study or equivalent experience required
  • Minimum two years Flammability Certification Lab Procedures or five years aviation related experience required
  • Previous Quality department experience preferred
  • Proficiency with database entry, MS Office, Lotus Notes, Adobe Acrobat, and AS400
