Potomac State College (WVU Keyser), part of the West Virginia University system of campuses, located in Keyser, WV is seeking applications for a Title III Professional Advisor.

About the Opportunity

As the Title II Professional Advisor, you will Implement centralized and proactive advising model to undeclared FTF and prospective students, transfer students, and non-traditional students helping them choose a major, select classes, understand academic procedures, and set related career goals. You will work during the summer to meet with new students and/or returning students to help them develop and/or adjust their course schedules during advising events and for students enrolled in summer classes. You will monitors students' academic progress and provide proactive support in a nurturing environment that encourages student retention and completion.

What you'll do:



  • Provide proactive, individual advising to assigned undeclared and prospective freshmen students using a variety of services including individual appointments, walk-in hours, online chat, and email.
  • Provide information regarding registration, course sequences, and degree requirements.
  • Advise students on specific degree requirements, course content, recommend electives based on students' areas of interest.
  • Assist students experiencing problems and provide referrals as needed.
  • Mediate problems or questions that arise between students and instructors/faculty; Interpret and apply university rules and regulations in a way that allows academic flexibility within the limits of department/ college/university requirements.
  • Assist advisees in completing forms and letters as needed, for example, financial aid appeals.
  • Develop Educational Success Plans for advisees from initial registration through completion.
  • Meet with advisees at least four times per semester.
  • Track advisees' academic progress through Early Alert, one-on-one meetings and communication with the instructors of advisees.
  • Work with the Academic Success Center to identify student needs in tutoring programs.
  • Meet with and develop Early Intervention Plans for those advisees with < 2.0 GPAs at midterm, appearing on the Early Alert Report, on academic probation, returning from academic suspension, or in danger of losing scholarships and/or Pell Grants.
  • Employ technology-enabled advising tools such as degree audits, academic planners, early-alert and communication tools (e.g., email, text, live chat), and instruct students how to use online and self-service academic planning. and career development tools. Keep abreast of current trends and best practices in advising and technology based advising tools.
  • Conduct outreach (e.g., phone calls, staffing tables) to students in support of retention-based programming efforts, and facilitate/participate in workshops and events designed to assist students with orientation, career exploration resources, transferring, academic planning, use of support services, etc.
  • Offer faculty development seminars/workshops on advisement techniques for faculty advising students with declared majors.
  • Will need to work flexible hours including evening and weekends on occasion. Participates in and facilitates advisor training as prescribed by NACADA.
  • Participate in and lead assessment initiatives related to the efficacy of academic advisement.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned from time to time by leadership

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in guidance counseling, education, student personnel, or related area.
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience in college advising and course selection required
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience implementing best practices in advising
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

  • Ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent organizational, management, and computer skills
  • Demonstrated experience working successfully in a high-traffic, high-demand environment
  • Ability to meet deadlines in a timely manner;
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, oral and presentation skills.

Requirements

  • Valid Driver's License to travel to off-campus meetings and conferences.
