Position: Physician Assistant - Urologic Oncology

Schedule: Full Time

Department: Urology

Under the general supervision of a physician, the Physician Assistant will provide expertise in treatments that improve our urology patients' overall health and quality of life in a comfortable, casual, and caring setting. Specifically, this position will have a focus on patients being evaluated and/or treated for urologic cancers (e.g., prostate cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer). The Physician Assistant will work closely with Urologic Oncologists in providing comprehensive care in the pre-operative and post-operative settings. In addition to patient care, the Physician Assistant will be actively involved in liaising with our medical and radiation oncology colleagues to provide a multidisciplinary care approach. This includes being an integral member of the weekly multi-disciplinary tumor board conference. There may also be ample time to manage non-oncologic (general urology) patients.

Note: The Physician Assistant performs clinical duties in compliance with the scope of services defined by 263 CMR 5.00, Massachusetts Board of Registration of Physician Assistants. All professional activities of a physician assistant must be supervised by a supervising physician approved by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine pursuant to 243 CMR 2.08(7).

Duties and responsibilities:


  • Evaluate and diagnose health conditions in an outpatient clinical setting
  • Perform comprehensive medical history and physical examinations
  • Direct, counsel, and educate patients for comprehensive treatment protocols, including innovative techniques or procedures.
  • Prescribe medication following designated state statutes and following professional practice guidelines.
  • Utilize and implement accurate electronic medical record-keeping.
  • Review of blood laboratory results.
  • Exhibit exemplary bedside manner, empathy, and establish rapport with patients.
  • Other medical, clerical, and administrative duties as assigned


  • Perform and document complete, detailed, and accurate histories and physical exams, review patient records to develop comprehensive medical status reports, and order laboratory, radiologic, and diagnostic studies.
  • Under the supervision of the physician, make medical diagnoses and institute therapy of referrals of patients to the appropriate health care facilities, agencies, other resources of the community, or other physicians.
  • Provide instruction and guidance regarding medical matters to patients.
  • Perform or assist with the following office procedures:

    • Cystoscopies
    • Prostate needle biopsies
    • Vasectomies
    • Urodynamics
    • Catheterizations and catheter removals
    • Retrograde pyelograms and urethrograms
    • Wound care
    • Drain removals
    • Procedures may be added or limited by Physicians
    • Preparing tissue for pathologic examinations


  • Perform or assist with the following laboratory medical techniques:

    • The drawing of arterial, venous, or peripheral blood
    • Urinary bladder cauterization and routine analysis
    • The collection of materials for bacterial and viral culture
    • Perform electrocardiograms
    • Injection of subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous medications
    • Debridement of wounds
    • Removal of sutures
    • Administration of subcutaneous local anesthesia
    • Incision and drainage of superficial skin infections
    • Pre and post op care, inpatient hospital care


  • Other duties as required for patient care or assigned

Education:

Qualified Physician Assistants will hold at least a Bachelor's degree and must be a graduate of a PA Program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA) or its predecessor.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations required:

In order to apply for the position, the PA must be National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistant (NCCPA) PANCE eligible and eligible for PA licensure in the State of Massachusetts. Documentation of Massachusetts PA license and initial NCCPA certification is required upon hire. If prescribing medications is included in clinical duties and privileges, Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration are required.

Experience:

Prior experience in a similar clinical setting/specialty is preferred.

Knowledge and Skills:

Successful candidates will be self-directed, demonstrate initiative and professionalism, and exercise expert clinical judgment to function independently in this role. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English are required in order to communicate complex medical information to collaborators such as patients and their families, physicians, staff, and community health workers. Physician assistants who have exceptional problem-solving and conflict resolution skills are preferred. Individuals with an interest and/or expertise in caring for diverse populations of patients with varying levels of health literacy are encouraged to apply for this position.
