Position Purpose |
The Instrument & Control Technician supports the operation of Dartmouth's utility systems. The position maintains and repairs components (pneumatic, electronic and digital) of the utility system control systems including updating graphics and programming control schemes and systems logic to support the thermal and electrical generation systems. Types of equipment include boilers, turbine generators, pumps, vfd's, meters, UPS's, other related equipment in the operation of power plant, and utility distribution system and in the future Dartmouth's heat pump plant(s) and associated equipment. The position is also responsible for the daily calibration, maintenance, and data collection of the College's power plant continuous emissions monitors, which is essential for regulatory compliance. |

- High School graduate with technical school degree in electronics preferred.
- Five-plus years of relevant experience.
- Must hold a valid driver's license and be able to qualify as a Dartmouth Approved Driver.
- Skill in maintenance and repair procedures, including preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and repair, construction, and installation of electronic, electrical, and mechanical control systems and components. Mechanical aptitude and computer skills, with knowledge of Windows Operating System. Solid understanding of device communications protocols including Ethernet/IP, BACnet MSTP, BACnet IP, Modbus RTU, and Modbus TCP communications protocols with the ability to troubleshoot basic network communications issues.
- Aptitude with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and OneNote.
- Proficiency, or willingness to gain proficiency, with software related to position including set up, configuration, and maintenance.
- Must have the ability to follow complex written and oral assignments and communicate effectively.
- Must be able to work independently under minimal supervision, exercise sound judgement, and have excellent problem-solving skills.
- Must successfully complete and remain certified and compliant in all safety or trades related course work as may be required by the College.
- Ability to perform math computations as related to trade, and ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics.
- Strong customer service orientation.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Technical school degree in electronics preferred.
- Familiarity with temporary and permanent electric, water and steam condensate energy and flow-monitoring devices, including electro-magnetic and ultrasonic flow monitoring equipment, and packaged BTU meters.
Must have successfully completed the following training prior to performing work to which the training relates:

Description |
Maintenance
- Repairs, troubleshoots, and replaces as necessary digital, analog, pneumatic and electronic devices used to measure, indicate, or control various systems.
- Provides routine and preventative maintenance on equipment, meters, and control systems.
- Coordinates schedules with plant management in order to participate in scheduled and emergency boiler maintenance and repair efforts.
- Maintains and checks operation of the Continuous Emissions Monitor on a daily basis.
- Maintains, troubleshoots, and reconfigures plant distributed control systems, hardware and software using the engineering workstation to monitor and change the logic process including the management of 3500 tags on both primary and backup servers.
- Troubleshoots and repairs plant boiler burner management systems and boiler air-fuel-water controls of pneumatic and electronic types.
- Communicates with external contacts/vendors for repair and replacement parts, and coordinates work as necessary with other Dartmouth staff to complete assignments.
- Conducts maintenance on plant UPS systems including battery testing and monitoring to provide historical trending for predictive analysis.
- Performs preventative maintenance on complex systems and equipment, requiring state-of-the-art techniques and testing procedures.
- Maintains records of system installations, repairs, calibrations, and tests, using databases, spreadsheets, word documents, and drawings as appropriate.
- Utilizes metering database, distributed control systems (DCS), campus energy management system (CEMS), and/or Building Automation Systems (BAS) to validate meter operation and troubleshoot issues as they arise.
Calibration and Installation
- Calibrates meters, indicators, gauges and transmitters including performing regular testing of equipment. Performs turnkey installation of new equipment (wiring, piping, calibration and start up).Calibrates and maintains in good working order all plant meters, transmitters, gauges, Distributed con). Calibrates, control valves and actuators.
- Installs, maintains, programs, and tunes all VFD/VSDs and soft starts associated with plant equipment.
Data Collection and Reporting
- Collects emissions data and performs statistical analyses to prepare required reports.
- As directed by Plant management, reports emission results from data collected on a daily/quarterly basis to state and federal agencies.
- Conducts Quarterly Audits of CEM equipment. As required by Federal regulations, records calibrations made, parts and components used, and inventory of parts on hand.
- Maintains and catalogs historical data, populates databases for plant daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual usage and efficiency reports.
- Conducts root cause analysis when process control issues arise through the use of DCS historical trends.
- Conducts thermal imaging of all electrical motors and cabinets to provide historical trending for predictive analysis.
Other
- Develops, implements, and improves control schemes and system logic (software and hardware), including user interface applications.
- Updates existing DCS graphics and/or design new graphics per user and/or technology demand.
- Assists with other mechanical, electrical and distribution maintenance activities in the power plant.
- Crossed training in plant operations with the goal of being able to operate both the electrical and boiler control rooms.
