The Position

The Opportunity

The Cell Therapy department in gRED (Genentech Research and Early Development) is looking for a motivated and inquisitive Scientist to help develop novel therapies to combat intractable diseases. We are looking for a candidate with a scientific background in cell therapy or stem cell biology, coupled with a resourceful aptitude for problem-solving. The successful applicant will display a proactive and collaborative work ethic, proficiently engaging and communicating across diverse teams with the shared goal of contributing to the Genentech cell therapy pipeline. This position will report to a Principal Scientist and play a pivotal role in shaping the growth, culture and future of the Cell Therapy Research department.

Key responsibilities

  • Plan, conduct, and analyze experiments leveraging a diversity of cell types to support existing cell therapy efforts at Genentech, as well as help develop new ones

  • Learn and develop new methods to efficiently produce engineered cell therapies from iPSC with controlled cellular composition

  • Actively collaborate with groups both within and outside gRED, encompassing the cycle of development of successful cell therapies

  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate experimental records utilizing electronic tools

  • Participate and contribute to strategic planning enabling the contribution of the Cell Therapy department to Genentech's pipeline

Who You Are

  • Education & Experience: A PhD with 3+ years of relevant experience, a Master's with 6+ years of experience, or a Bachelor's with 8+ years of experience

  • A record of scientific contributions evidenced by co-authorship of papers, patents, or IND reports, and/or significant contribution to a gene or cell therapy pipeline

  • Technical Expertise:

    • Direct experience with cell therapy or gene therapy, including construct design and functional characterization

    • A robust background in stem cell culture and engineering using a variety of gene editing modalities for knockouts and large gene insertions in ES/iPS cells and/or primary T cells

    • Experience with pooled screens or high-throughput arrayed screens

    • Working knowledge and appetite for the development of cell augmentation tools for next generation cell therapies

    • Proficiency with functional readout assays such as flow cytometry, ddPCR/qPCR, NGS, and RNA-seq

  • Core Competencies:

    • An inherent team player with strong communication skills, able to prioritize team objectives and collaborate effectively

    • Strong work ethic, scientific curiosity, rigor, and a keen eye for detail

Relocation benefits are available for this posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $101,400 to $188,200. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
