This position will help directly support an emerging research portfolio on energy-water nexus and resilience at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO). The nascent Energy-Water Resilience portfolio seeks to fund research, development and demonstration of new technologies and solutions that are at the intersection of energy systems and water systems with the goals of enhancing reliability, resilience, and integration. Research efforts under this portfolio include innovations in energy-efficient water/wastewater treatment technologies, integrated energy-water systems models designed for decision-making, and community engagement and adoption.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in the candidate's field of study.
  • Support broad efforts to create a portfolio seeking to increase resilient energy-water systems.
  • Organize and participate in internal and external strategic discussions to inform program activities, strategy, and future year planning.
  • Network and build connections between WPTO's Energy-Water Resilience portfolio and other initiatives.
  • Incorporate stakeholder feedback to inform program and project design and to ensure federal research investments align with stakeholder needs.
  • Support intra- and interagency coordination of WPTO's role in the energy water nexus.
  • Manage Research & Development projects and other initiatives related to integrated energy and water systems. Provide recommendations to the federal team lead on technical performance, costs, and schedule required to meet project goals and objectives. Identify and communicate potential issues to the federal team lead and work toward resolutions.
  • Lead periodic update calls with funding recipients and, when appropriate, perform site visits.
  • Represent WPTO by participating in conferences, workshops, site visits, and external meetings.
  • Support in preparing briefing materials and presentations, papers, reports, and responses to inquiries for both internal and external distribution.
  • Support WPTO leadership in budget formulation, including drafting or providing input to the Congressional Budget Justification and planning future budget development.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Energy Systems, Water Resource Management, Environmental Engineering or related fields.
  • Research experience in water resources, energy resources, or systems engineering.
  • Prior project management experience.
  • Proven success collaboratively working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent communication skills with an ability to present complex information to a diverse audience.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Successful drug screening.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a security or clearance badge.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic understanding of energy systems and the clean energy transition.
  • Familiarity with energy and water policy or an interest in science policy.
  • Familiarity with the DOE National Lab System.
  • Previous experience in stakeholder engagement.
  • Experience collaborating with local, state, and/or federal agencies.
  • Experience designing and building new programs, initiatives, and/or strategies.
  • Experience with technology innovation, irrigation water systems, industrial wastewater, sustainability, and/or one water concepts.
  • Ability to monitor government-funded technology R&D, modeling, analysis, and technical assistance projects.

Location/Work Arrangement:

  • A hybrid work arrangement in Golden, CO or Washington, DC is preferred; however, remote work may be considered at the hiring manager's discretion.

Starting compensation for this role typical salary ranges between $126,000 - $134,000 annually is commensurate with experience relative to the position and may vary based on candidate geographical location.
