The Facilities Management Department at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Building Trades Specialist I.

About the Opportunity:

The Trades Specialist I performs work related to electrical, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical and other trades as needed. The incumbent performs a wide variety of tasks that involve installation, repair, and maintenance.

What you'll do:



  • Performs mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry repairs as the situation requires.
  • May be required to assist shop personnel with emergency repairs when necessary.
  • Conducts daily routine inspections of all facilities maintained by Facilities Management ensuring proper functioning of equipment as to minimize any damage to building, equipment, property and danger to life.
  • Conducts normal operating procedures on equipment regarding routine adjustments.
  • Responds to fire alarms, hazardous material emergencies, hazardous road conditions, power outages, storm damage, loss of main steam supply, securing buildings, and acts as a liaison between Facilities Management and the University community.
  • Performs snow removal with various types of equipment.
  • Operates equipment such as backhoe, forklift, bobcat, snowplow, and mechanical lifts.
  • Performs removal and management of asbestos abatement as assigned.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or as directed.


Pay Grade: 13

Work hours: Mon-Fri 7-3p

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Requires one of the following:

    • Two years experience in general trades building maintenance experience in the areas of basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or other craft trades
    • Completion of an associate degree in building maintenance or other craft trade
    • Completion of a 2-year accredited vocational craft trades program


  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:



  • Working knowledge of the materials, methods, tools, equipment, occupational hazards and safety precautions of the building maintenance field to include carpentry, electrical, HVAC, welding, soldering, plumbing, asbestos, pneumatics, and DDC.
  • Demonstrated ability to use and operate all appropriate hand and power tools and equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to read blueprints and electrical schematics
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal building, safety, and fire codes.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer


Physical Demands:



  • Incumbent will be required to perform physical exertion such as the lifting of heavy items (more than 50 lb), keep bending, climbing, crawling and/or working in difficult or cramped positions for long periods of time. Subjected to heights in excess of 20 feet while performing manual tasks, working on overhead structures and equipment from ladders and scaffolds. Performs tasks while wearing respirators. Works outdoors in inclement weather.

Requirements

  • Valid Driver's License
  • Other certification may be required, such as asbestos certification (within one year of hire)
  • EPA Universal Technician certification (within one year of hire)
  • OSHA 10-hour certification (within one year of hire),
  • CPR and First Aid certification (within one year of hire)
  • Universal Refrigerant Certificate (required by EPA).
