Job Summary
The Electrician reports to the Superintendent of the Electric Shop within Plant Operations & Maintenance (PO&M) and is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems that support hospital and campus utility operations at UC Davis Health. This includes normal and emergency power distribution, lighting, fire alarm, and nurse call systems. The position performs journeyman-level electrical and electronic maintenance, construction, and troubleshooting, with responsibilities in safety, training, special events, and emergency response. Key Responsibilities * Operate, maintain, and repair electrical and control systems for hospital and campus utilities. * Troubleshoot, test, and inspect electrical equipment to ensure safety and compliance with codes. * Perform preventive maintenance to ensure reliable system performance. * Support and maintain fire alarm, nurse call, and emergency generator systems. * Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities. * Adhere to UC Davis Health and regulatory safety standards. * Assist with training, safety programs, and special events. * Participate in on-call rotations and respond to electrical emergencies as needed. Valid California Driver's License and acceptable driving record per UC Davis Health policy; participation in the California Employer Pull Notice Program may be required. Current Journeyman Electrician Certification or equivalent journey-level experience and knowledge of electrical systems, practices, tools, and equipment. High school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of five (5) years of commercial or industrial electrical experience. Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical specifications, blueprints, drawings, and detailed plans.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current Journeyman Electrician Certification.
- Experience working in a hospital or healthcare facility.
- Demonstrated ability to fabricate, install, maintain, service, repair, replace, and modify electrical systems and related components.
- Experience in inspecting, and performing preventive maintenance on electrical systems and components.
- Proficiency in using computer systems to manage work assignments, plan, track, and manage costs and schedules.
- Ability to maintain accurate records of labor hours and material costs.
- Knowledge of electrical safety principles and regulations, including the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70E, and California Code of Regulations (Electrical Safety Orders).
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interpret and convey technical information, manuals, drawings, and work instructions effectively.

Department Overview The Plant Operations & Maintenance (PO&M) Department is a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week operation responsible for the operation, repair, and maintenance of buildings, systems, and grounds at the UC Davis Health System, which includes 148 acres and structures that total 4 million GMSF. Plant Operations & Maintenance is one of the largest operations and maintenance support providers to clinical, administrative, research, SOM, and SON departments throughout the Health System. UC Davis Health System is one of several UC campuses that have their own cogeneration, central power plants. Cogeneration (Combined Heat and Power or CHP) is the simultaneous production of electricity and heat, both of which are used throughout the Medical Center Campus, and is supported by Plant Operations & Maintenance 24x7x365. Work Environment
UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco-free campus effective January 1, 2014.
