Responsible and accountable for assessing, planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating the staff development and educational activities designed to address identified or anticipated needs of learners for assigned area(s). Assures the quality of patient care delivered on assigned cross-campus unit(s) through the assessment, coaching, and development of the nursing staff. Participates in the development and implementation of educational programs for the entire Nursing Department. Collaborates with the Graduate School of Nursing.

I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Creates atmosphere conducive for learners to learn and to practice in accordance with Standards of Nursing Practice.
2. Collaborates with nursing leadership and other members of the interprofessional team in defining nursing standards, practices, and educational needs of patient and nursing staff.
3. Conducts an educational needs assessment for area(s) of responsibility on a regular basis.
4. Designs, organizes, implements, and evaluates orientation, in-service, and continuing education programs for staff in assigned areas.
5. Develops expertise of nursing staff with patients and patient populations managed on assigned unit(s).
6. Develops curricula, instructional materials, tests, and evaluation tools, evaluates commercially produced materials, and maintains current educational supplies and equipment. Revises the curricula based on evidenced based practice and practice based evidence.
7. Promotes evidence-based educational methods and technologies that support development of nursing expertise.
8. Assures that staff meets required competencies, both annual and unit based, for area of practice.
9. Serves as a role model and resource for less experienced Nurse Professional Development Generalists.
10. Develops precepting skills of staff nurses in assigned area(s) and oversees charge nurse orientation for nurses new to that role.
11. Serve as a consultant to / facilitator for nursing shared leadership councils, nurse leaders, and other members of the interprofessional team in the planning of formal and informal learning activities within the medical center as requested.
12. Coordinates student clinical experiences with faculty from schools of nursing and other disciplines that utilize our clinical site for education.
13. Serves as faculty for Department of Nursing programs. Participates in educational strategic planning efforts for the Department of Nursing.
14. Presents papers, posters or workshops at scholarly meetings.
15. Establishes and maintains effective communication within areas of responsibility and with other departments.
16. Assists staff nurses to apply educational principles to patient education sessions.
17. Maintains required data, records, and statistics for administrative, regulatory, and evaluation purposes for educational programs delivered.
18. Keeps current on best practice standards of nursing practice and education. Identifies policies, standards, and practices not in compliance with current standards and communicates needed revisions through the nursing leadership and shared leadership structures.
19. Supports / participates in current research activities that affect area(s) of current responsibility or specialty area of interest / expertise.
20. Seeks opportunities to lead organizational improvement, consistently applying Lean thinking to departmental operations to enhance/improve service.
21. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
22. Serves as a consultant to nursing staff in the evaluation of process improvement activities.
23. Assists nurse managers and other nursing staff with projects and activities to support the nursing area(s) of responsibility.
24. Maintains a current BLS instructor card
25. Promotes a culture of safety within the organization.
26. Follows or recommends revisions of established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.

Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities:

2. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
3. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
4. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.

6. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
7. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Master's degree in Nursing, Education, or related healthcare field required.
2. Currently holds an active RN license in the State of Massachusetts.

Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Must have at least 5 years of clinical nursing experience with at least 1 year experience in clinical preceptor and/or charge nurse role.
2. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
3. Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation computer software.
4. Position requires frequent use of the computer, keyboard and printer; educational equipment such as teaching manikins, simulators, LCD projectors, etc.; and reading of printed materials

Preferred:
1. A minimum of 3 years of experience in teaching highly desired.
2. Process improvement experience preferred.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work may involve lifting, bending, standing, sitting and exposure to infectious diseases. Position requires work indoors on a nursing unit, and in normal office and classroom environments. This work may be required off shift and/or weekends.
