In collaboration with the site-based MGB Quality team, Vice Chair of Quality, Assistant CMO for Pediatrics and Assistant CMO for Pediatric Surgery, the Safety Nurse Specialist works with MGB leadership and staff in ambulatory, inpatient, procedural areas and other departments to identify safety risks, lead, facilitate or participate in projects which reduce risk or improve quality and promote a culture of patient safety and continuous quality improvement. The MGB Quality and Safety Nurse Specialist works very closely with the MGB Inpatient and Ambulatory Physician Quality Directors, the MGB Quality and Safety Senior Administrative Manager, and Program Coordinator in assisting with the execution of the core MGB Office of the Chief Medical Officer (OCMO) functions within the department, including:
* quality and safety * credentialing and privileging * provider performance excellence (including oversight of OPPE and FPPE) * patient experience * health equity * professionalism * clinician well-being S/he will investigate, triage, and analyze safety reports, critical events, and patient complaints. S/he will identify areas for improvement, design improvement actions, and coordinate implementation and sustainability in conjunction with pediatric leadership and staff as well as other services. The MGB Quality and Safety Nurse chairs, participates in or assists with the work of MGB quality and safety committees as well as those throughout the hospital and system. The incumbent serves as a resource in pediatric policies and procedures as well as connecting others with existing MGB resources. S/he assists leadership and staff in maintaining compliance with Joint Commission Standards, meeting Magnet Re-designation criteria and other regulatory matters. Follows up on safety reports including the investigation of near miss and critical events and participation in root cause analysis; conducts medical record reviews, collects and records data, identifies areas for improvements, suggest improvement actions to leadership and committees, assists in the preparation of reports for department and regulatory compliance and provide feedback to reporters and other staff. o Provide general project management support for selected MGB Quality and Safety projects. As project manager is responsible for: o Overseeing, tracking and facilitating all aspects of the project. o Working with leaders of all departments involved in the project o Ensuring that plans are executed o Support change among staff to ensure that design and implementation are successful o Keep leadership aware of bottlenecks and barriers to success o Work to develop effective reporting and meaningful measurement o Work to design and implement training programs as necessary o Supports the MGB Quality and Safety Committees by serving as committee participant or chair where applicable, supporting agenda development and follow up and preparing minutes. o Represents MGB on hospital-wide quality and safety committees, Partners groups and Professional Organizations o Analyzes, verifies and interprets QA/QI data including summarizing data for report development. o Conduct medical record reviews as needed o Serves as a resource regarding policies and procedures; assisting with the creation and maintenance of MGB clinical procedures and protocols. o Liaisons with administration, providers, staff and quality experts across the organization in the identification and mitigation of patient safety risk. o Participates in hospital-wide quality and safety programs (tracer program, Joint Commission Preparation, Magnet Re-designation) o Prepares formal written communications on behalf of the Quality and Safety Team (Newsletter, Safety Alerts, memorandums, reports, grant submissions etc) o Adheres to the MGB patient privacy & confidentiality policy regarding verbal, written, and electronic patient information. o Plans and implements educational programs relating to quality and safety o Works with Quality and Safety Team to submit manuscripts for publication and present at national conferences Education Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Excellent organization, leadership, analytics and problem solving skills - Ability to coordinate and lead complex system projects - Working knowledge of quality improvement and patient safety concepts - Ability to conduct and document detailed patient medical record reviews. - Familiar with state, federal and external agency compliance and accreditation requirements. - Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) - Demonstrated interest in publication and presentation at National Conferences - Ability to organize, interpret and summarize data; establish and interpret metrics Physical Requirements The General Hospital Corporation is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
