Purpose, Scope & Dimension of Job:
Purpose: The Risk and Safety Coordinator reports to and provides operational support to the Risk/Safety and Emergency Manager and works closely with other Human Resources leaders, as well as other College stakeholders to provide health and safety compliance as required by the College.
Scope: The Risk and Safety Coordinator will review and recommend risk management strategies to minimize risk and cost to the College This responsibility includes all coordination activities involved in Risk Management and Health and Safety. The coordination will involve the monitoring and recommendations of safety measures for compliance with applicable laws and regulations. This execution will require the successful fostering of strong relationships with Public Safety and other stakeholders, including consultants, vendors and governmental agencies, to support the Risk/Safety and Emergency Manager to maintain a complete and responsive College-wide enterprise risk management program.
The responsibilities of the position require that this individual maintain a close working relationship with all members of the College community who are responsible for risk control. This position will work with departments and individuals across the College to persuade and motivate conformance to risk management and health and safety policies and procedures.
In summary, the Coordinator will anticipate and respond to the needs of the Risk/Safety and Emergency Manager, the institution and stakeholders, support the safe working and learning environment, and uphold compliance with various laws and regulations related to environmental health and safety.

Minimum Requirements |
1) Bachelor's degree or 4+ years of directly related experience.
2) Two years of directly related Health and Safety work experience for an organization of similar size and complexity to the College. Experience must include compliance with relevant federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations governing the environment, occupational health and safety (
OSHA / MI-
OSHA), and loss prevention and control.
3) Ability to use spreadsheets and databases (at an intermediate or advance level) to collect, control and report information related to Health and Safety programs.
4) Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google productivity tools.
5)
OSHA Certification as Instructor within one year of employment or appointment.
6) Level I - Safety & Health General Industry Certification through
MIOSHA or similar agency within one year of employment or appointment.
7) Complete
RCRA Hazardous Waste Manager Certification within one year of employment or appointment.
8) Complete Hazmat Ground Shipper certification within one year of employment or appointment. |
Additional Desirable Qualifications |
1) Bachelor's degree in a risk management or occupational health and safety related field.
2) Health and Safety work experience at an educational institution.
3) Risk management experience.
4) Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel and/or Access to collect, track and report information related to risk management or health and safety.
5) Experience working effectively with MCC's administrative and management teams and external organizations.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions |
Unique Aspects of the Job: 1) Subject to extreme physical and weather related conditions during emergency situations.
Physical Requirements: 1) Office and shop environment; regularly exposed to mechanical, chemical and electrical hazards; occasionally subject to dirt, dust, noise, fumes, wetness/humidity, poor lighting, confined spaces, elevated heights, asbestos and other hazardous substances. May involve periodic exposure to extreme noise and extreme temperatures requiring the use of protective equipment.
2) Must be able to remain in a stationary position more than 50% of the time.
3) Must be able to tolerate frequent exposure to a wide variety of chemicals which are common to the College environment.
4) The person in this position needs to frequently move about the entire campus including all remote college facilities.
5) Frequently operates a computer and other office productivity machinery.
6) Occasionally positions self to examine office machinery, move files.
7) The person in this position constantly communicates with others on the full range of topics covered in this job description. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
8) Occasionally carries and moves light loads (approx. 25 lbs. or less). |
Work Schedule |
Full-time. This position will require flexibility to work non-traditional business hours Always on call; must be capable of responding to emergency situations 24/7/365. Additional hours may be required to accommodate workload, deadlines, presentations, meeting schedules, etc. Must be capable of working extended hours in case of emergency situations. |
