Title: Unit Manager - Unintentional Injury Prevention

Location: Hybrid - Lansing, MI Office

Purpose: This position serves as manager of and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Unintentional Injury Prevention Unit, including its staff, budget, programs, and plans. This position supervises and directs a wide range of activities related to statewide programming, public health surveillance, policy, and environmental change in the areas of unintentional injury prevention. This position also works with staff in the Division of Chronic Disease and Injury Control, and the broader Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), to coordinate and integrate all chronic disease and injury prevention programming, risk factor and health promotion plans and programs, to address health disparities, improve efficiency and maximize the impact on the health of Michigan populations.



Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the Unit.
  • Manage program activities and develop goals and objectives for the Unit.
  • Manage evaluation process for unit activities and programs.
  • Disseminate information through reports, conferences, or direct assistance to internal and external partners.
  • Evaluate staff performance and encourage staff development.
  • Take appropriate corrective actions with staff when needed.
  • Hire additional staff as necessary, and provide orientation, training, and oversight for new staff members.
  • Continuously promote high quality performance, organizational improvement, and innovations.
  • Ensure equal opportunity employment guidelines, the prevention of sexual harassment and requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act are carried out within the unit.
  • Communicate with department administration as necessary.
  • Monitor department and division deadlines and complete administrative paperwork as needed.
  • Participate in federal trainings and department management trainings as required.
  • Determine budget priorities and plan expenditures based on level of funding and other parameters regarding the use of federal funds.
  • Supervise development of annual work plan and program budgets for federal agreements and overall Unit spending plan.
  • Ensure that all federal- and state-funded contracts are executed and monitored in accordance with MDHHS contract requirements including, but not limited to, sub-recipient monitoring for the unit.
  • Oversee Request for Proposal (RFP) processes performed by the Unit.
  • Act as Principal Investigator (PI)/Co-PI for federal grants.
  • Interpret laws, policies, procedures, and federal guidelines related to programs.
  • Monitor federal and state appropriation expenditures based on spending plan and federal/state requirements.
  • Ensure timely completion of federal reporting requirements and deliverables according to schedule for unit.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate partnerships with other state and federal agencies, community agencies, local health departments, universities and business, labor, consumer, and professional groups.
  • Increase collaboration with partners on improving health outcomes related to unintentional injuries.
  • Represent the Unit on statewide committees and coalitions as necessary.
  • Represent the Division on department committees.
  • Represent MDHHS on state and federal committees and workgroups.
  • Promote Unit program activities and outcomes to internal and external partners.
  • Participate actively in division efforts to develop coordinated and integrated chronic disease control, injury prevention, and health promotion programming.
  • Participate in implementation of the Division's strategic plan to address root causes for health inequities for chronic diseases and injuries.
  • Take on leadership roles to enable the Division to effectively implement and align work with healthcare and community services systems to change initiatives in the state.
  • Always represent the best interests of MPHI and MDHHS.Other duties as assigned.



Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: MPH or master's degree in a health-related field is required.

Experience: A minimum of one year supervising and one year experience, or more (preferred) related experience, in substance use disorder, health education and outreach, and project management at the state or community level. Experience with partnership-building, public health program development and implementation, contract evaluation is preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: No significant physical effort is required for this position. This position requires desk work, significant use of the computer and some travel at the state and national levels. Requires a valid vehicle operator's license to attend off-site meetings, conferences, and training. Requires ability to travel as some amount of travel may be necessary to perform the duties of this position. The office location for this position is at Elliott-Larsen Building: 320 S. Walnut, Lansing, MI 48933 and in-office work is required on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the option of working remotely on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Remote work is not guaranteed and is based on program needs. All work performed whether remote or hybrid must be completed within Michigan. Work location and schedule will be confirmed at the time of hire.



RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS: Will manage at least five staff members.
