Your Role on the Team

The Assistant Dean for Admissions is responsible for managing all aspects of juris doctor(J.D.) student recruitment and enrollment for the University of California, Irvine School of Law. Reporting directly to the Dean, the Assistant Dean leads the Admissions Office, develops and implements a competitive marketing and recruitment strategy, allocates scholarships to incoming J.D. students, manages and develops pipeline programs, and oversees and participates in activities designed to facilitate acceptance by admitted applicants to the J.D. degree program. The programs and processes are designed to attract and admit highly qualified and talented applicants from a range of backgrounds and experiences to advance the law school's commitment to excellence. As a member of the senior leadership team of the Law School, the Assistant Dean represents the interests of the Law School at national meetings and conferences and oversees a sophisticated professional staff in the Admissions Office. Applicants should possess a strategic orientation towards law school admissions, be an inspiring leader within the admissions field, and bring an innovative, data-driven, and collaborative mindset to the position.

ADMISSIONS PROCESS MANAGEMENT

1. In consultation with the Dean and the Faculty Admissions Committee, establish admissions goals for the J.D. degree program. Consult with the Dean and faculty in the school's development of its admissions policies. Policies must seek to maintain the Law School's top academic reputation while recruiting a talented, diverse, and inspiring class of future leaders. UC Irvine Law receives around 3200 to 4000 J.D. applications each year, with an entering class expected to be around 185 students.

2. Help advance the law school's mission and goals. The law school, with a foundational commitment to public service, seeks to graduate reflective practice-ready lawyers to take on pressing challenges at the highest levels of the legal profession.

3. Oversee the review process and evaluation of applications for the Law School, including implementing the process for identifying, attracting, and recruiting candidates that will make up the Law School's incoming first-year J.D. class.

4. Exercise final decision-making authority with regard to 1L J.D. and transfer applications, while ensuring target enrollment and revenue goals are met.

5. Collaborate with other internal Law School offices regarding admissions and various administrative issues to ease the transition of incoming law students and ensure they are best positioned for success.

6. Work closely with external departments such as UCI housing, residency, graduate division, and campus counsel to coordinate student related operations.

7. Strategically award scholarships and determine housing priority for admitted students.

RECRUITMENT AND MARKETING

1. Work closely with Communications staff to develop a creative recruitment and marketing strategy that attracts highly qualified, promising, J.D. candidates with a range of backgrounds and experiences, while emphasizing and conveying the law school's strengths and distinctiveness.

2. Maintain a strong understanding of admission trends and the strategic methods of other top-tier law schools to preserve a competitive edge. Inspire and work closely with Admissions Office staff to ensure strategies are fully implemented.

3. Nurture and build relationships on behalf of the law school with undergraduate programs, prelaw advisors, and with scholarship programs-at a broad range of universities and organizations-to build and enhance pipeline programs that advance the law school's mission focused on access and accessibility, and its commitment to public service.

4. Develop electronic and hard copy recruitment materials, including information contained on the admissions section of the Law School website, to publicize the mission of the Law School.

OFFICE ADMINISTRATION

1. Supervise full-time career employees located in the Admissions Office, and other staff assigned to assist with admissions and student recruitment and oversee their professional growth and development.

2. Manage the annual operating budget of the law school's Admissions Office.

3. Ensure that the Law School's policies, procedures, and standard practices meet requirements of federal and state law, as well as American Bar Association, Association of American Law Schools, and UC regulations to maintain accreditations and approvals, and ensure that the Admissions Office and its staff following those policies, procedures, and practices.

4. Determine ways that technology can be used to improve efficiency and enhance services at the law school, leveraging tools and resources available through the Law School Admission Council as well as UCI and Law School Information Systems departments.

5. Design, establish and maintain an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish goals and objectives, and to guide a well-functioning, highly effective admissions office team.


What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Demonstrated excellent judgment to evaluate candidates, review application files, and make admissions recommendations and decisions.
  • Knowledge of federal and state law and regulations related to enrollment management, admissions, and financial aid.
  • Skill in developing and managing financial budgets.
  • Senior level management experience and skill in program review, institutional assessment processes, and inter-office coordination.
  • Ability to implement and arrange for training in the use of existing computer programs and software tailored for Admissions applications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, collaborative relationships, including effectively enlisting support of faculty members, University staff, students, alumni, campus administrators and community constituencies, and to work collaboratively to accomplish program goals.
  • Skill in interacting effectively with individuals or groups representing various social, cultural, economic, and educational interests.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and an ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Skill in managing, directing and motivating personnel with diverse experiences and strengths in a complex, collaborative, consensus-based environment to fulfill goals and objectives. Demonstrated capacity to work as a team member and team builder.
  • Record of honesty and integrity.
  • Ability to travel extensively and to work evening and weekend hours.
  • Ability to work with, understand, and maintain the confidentiality of large amounts of quantitative and qualitative admissions data.
  • Ability to manage a heavy workload, effectively delegate portions of that workload to career admissions officers and staff and motivate employees and volunteers toward high performance.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience. Previous experience leading or supervising a team.

Preferred:

  • Juris Doctorate or LL.M. degree from an ABA-accredited law school preferred, with in-depth knowledge of law schools and the legal field.
  • Senior administrative experience at an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Knowledge of UC admissions and related regulations

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $128,400.00- $175,400.00 (Annual).
