Job Summary B&A is looking for an Assistant Controller to join our Huntsville, Alabama headquarters team in support of an important mission. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work with a collaborative, growth-minded team while supporting federal contracts around the country. We are seeking a self-motivated, meticulous and dedicated Finance and Accounting leader join our team. The Assistant Controller will be responsible for managing and overseeing financial aspects of inventory management, financial reporting, cost accounting, budgeting and forecasting, projects, ensuring accurate and timely accounting and reporting. This role will be the finance leader at the Huntsville, Alabama office and will work closely with the Controller and Chief Financial Officer at Headquarters in McLean, VA. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills, experience with inventory management, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders. Responsibilities
- Lead project inventory management, including the implementation of a new inventory module in an existing ERP system and creating standard reporting templates.
- Work with program managers and procurement team to identify inventory needs, resource planning, purchases, and related cash management
- Work with CFO to develop and implement cost accounting strategies, managing indirect rates and cost pools
- Work with the Controller and finance and accounting team to close the books on a monthly basis, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Assist in the preparation of budget and forecast materials
- Assist in Board of Director and external stakeholder reporting
- Leverage ERP system and project ledgers to investigate project variances and collaborate with project managers and Finance and Accounting team to identify and explain discrepancies.
- Report on project profitability to management, highlighting financial performance and trends.
- Review and approve overhead charges applied to projects, ensuring correct allocation of costs.
- Work with Finance and Accounting team to create or approve all project-related billings to customers, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Keep detailed records of project-related documents, including contracts, change orders, and other pertinent information.
- Review and approve supplier invoices related to projects, ensuring accuracy and compliance with contracts.
- Work with the finance and accounting team to set up project accounts in the accounting system to track financial transactions accurately.
- Collaborate with receivables staff to address unpaid contract billings and ensure timely collection.
- Respond promptly to customer requests for more detail, providing clear and accurate financial information.
- Approve the write-off of any project-related billings that cannot be billed to or collected from customers, ensuring proper documentation.
- Prepare and submit government reports and tax returns related to projects, ensuring compliance with regulations.
- Compile necessary information for internal and external auditors, providing accurate and comprehensive financial data as required.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 8+ years of relevant work experience.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Proven experience as an Accounting Manager, Assistant Controller, or in a similar role.
- 2+ years with experience with DCAA cost accounting.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with modeling, financial planning and analysis reporting, and monthly accounting reporting
- Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Desired Skills
- CPA or CMA certification.
- Experience with project accounting in the construction or engineering industry.
- Familiarity with ERP systems.
- Advanced Excel skills.
- Experience in preparing government reports and tax returns related to projects.
