Position description

The University of California, Irvine is seeking a Project Scientist to work in the STEM Learning Lab in the School of Education. Salary and rank within the Project Scientist series is commensurate with experience. The appointment is for two years, with possibility of renewal based on performance and availability of funding. Anticipated start date is August 1, 2025.

Responsibilities: Responsibilities include engaging in co-design sessions with teachers and students in the Santa Ana Unified School District and families from the Santa Ana Early Learning Initiative (SAELI); designing and implementing research and evaluation studies of STEM learning; analyzing data from such studies; publishing and presenting findings; writing funding proposals to seek external support; consulting with and mentoring teams of graduate and undergraduate students; managing communication, training sessions, and dissemination of research results; and coordinating the personnel and facilities within the STEM Learning Lab. The project scientist will work on a number of diverse projects related to academic writing, STEM education, playful learning, and technology development.

Requirements: Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Education and post-PhD experience; broad expertise in research and evaluation of STEM learning; particular expertise on topics related to playful learning, participatory design methodologies; deep knowledge of qualitative research design, including thematic analysis, interview and focus group techniques; successful experience in feasibility and usability studies; advanced expertise in academic writing and editing; successful experience in writing human subjects protocols; and expertise in leading research initiatives and teams. Prior experience collaborating with the UCI STEM Learning Lab and its projects is desirable.
