Scope of Position

The Microbiology laboratory encompasses specimen collection, processing and testing within the Department of Clinical Laboratories. Full service testing includes bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology, virology, parasitology, smear interpretation and molecular testing. The lab is staffed 24 hours per day, Sunday through Saturday. The position is responsible for delivering quality laboratory testing to OSUMC patients and clients as well as to the community. It requires effective verbal and written communication with staff and clients.

Position Summary

This Lead Medical Technologist directs the daily operations of the Microbiology area and provides leadership within the areas. This technologist performs specialized laboratory procedures toinclude interpretation of smears and cultures, performing and interpreting identification and susceptibility tests, specialized testing in AFB, mycology, virology, parasitology and/or molecular methods as assigned , verifies and reports test requests and results, and is directly responsible for the technical quality of tests performed in the laboratory. Administrative duties will include personnel evaluations for selected individuals, technical procedure writing/implementation, assisting with scheduling, training, and record keeping. This technologist works under the direction of the division director(s) and lab manager.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a Bachelor's degree in a biological science with post-degree experience in Clinical Microbiology preferred. MLS (ASCP) or M (ASCP) certification preferred. 3 years Clinical Laboratory experience preferred, supervisory experience preferred. Must have knowledge of Microbiology.
