Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV) supports the commercialization of university technology through technology licensing, the development of sponsored research agreements, and venture creation. We serve as business advisors to investigators at all ten schools of the university whose research has commercial potential. Our resources include intellectual property (IP) protection, technology analysis, marketing and licensing support, translational and venture funding support, physical space through our FastForward innovation hubs, and professional services such as mentorship, pro bono legal and accounting services, and educational programming.

Corporate Partnerships at JHTV is the university's front door for corporate partners seeking academic collaboration. Corporate Partnerships shepherd both university faculty and external partners towards establishment of research collaboration and provide support through the life cycle of the relationships.

We are seeking an Associate Director New Business Development. Reporting to the Director New Business Development on the Corporate Partnerships Team, the Associate Director New Business Development will play a critical role JHTV team by cultivating relationships with industry and faculty with the goal to establish industry-sponsored research. This position will be essential in leveraging Johns Hopkins University's vast research capabilities to maximize corporate revenue in alignment with the University's strategic priorities.

The Associate Director New Business Development will have a strong focus on proactive external outreach and business development, to promote the research, expertise and know-how of Johns Hopkins faculty leading to new industry-sponsored research. Specifically, the successful candidate will be responsible for independently developing and implementing business development initiatives, fostering relationships with key industry representatives, identifying and pitching potential research for industry sponsorship; and negotiating with industry sponsors to secure non-federal research funding for the University.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Industry Partnership Development

  • Implement Business Development processes focused on identifying, sourcing, engaging, and managing all aspects of new industry collaborations across life sciences and non-life sciences.
  • Leveraging data-driven approaches, serve as the business intelligence and marketing lead to identify specific underserved and emerging industry research trends and match them with companies and faculty expertise, develop value propositions based on the differentiated and competitive advantage of Johns Hopkins faculty, and develop commercialization plan to drive funded research collaborations.
  • Employ innovative strategies for identifying prospective partners, lead generation and marketing and outreach to reach new industry partners.
  • Cultivate strategic relationships with business and scientific leadership in target industries to identify new high-impact partnership opportunities across life sciences and non-life sciences.
  • Develop value propositions that align faculty research interests with corporate needs, prepare and pitches high-value Hopkins research that are in-line with industry priorities and facilitate meaningful engagement between Johns Hopkins faculty and industry partners.
  • Negotiate agreement terms with industry, with advisement from relevant internal stakeholders such as Research Administration and General Counsel's Office, to ensure Principal Investigators and the University are protected.

Faculty Engagement

  • Build trust with faculty and work collaboratively to develop pitches for industry sponsorship, reinforcing Johns Hopkins' differentiation and competitive advantage.
  • Serve as a bridge between faculty research programs and industry needs, highlighting innovative technologies needing further development.
  • Encourage and foster cross-disciplinary collaborations and initiatives that enhance Johns Hopkins faculty research visibility to industry.
  • Internal Collaboration
  • Engage across JHTV's functional areas, including ventures, licensing, and communications teams, to maximize partnership opportunities.
  • Coordinate effectively with essential internal stakeholders, including Office of Research Administration and General Counsel Office, grant managers, and other university offices, to usher research contracts through to execution.
  • Work within the University's Intellectual Property Policy framework to manage partnerships and technology marketing efforts responsibly.

Business Development Practices

  • Implement Business Development best practices to ensure consistency in sourcing and securing industry research agreements that maximize value for Johns Hopkins: Leverage tools, databases, and technology to manage, track and communicate results for areas of responsibility; Establish, maintain, and contribute strategic industry contacts to CRM platform.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage and meet multiple deadlines under pressure.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including professional, tactful interaction with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently while fostering collaboration across teams.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, desktop applications, and Salesforce (or equivalent CRM systems).
  • Ability to assemble, manipulate, and format data using software applications such as spreadsheets and relational databases.
  • Self-starter and proactive team player with a customer service orientation.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Science or Engineering, or MBA with an undergraduate Degree in science required.
  • Five (5) years of business development experience in industry, as evidenced by management of significant industry-sponsored partnerships.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident required due to Federal Export Controls.
  • Advanced degrees or combinations with directly related industry experience will also be considered.
  • Experience working in a business development, corporate development, project management, and consulting background a plus.

Total Rewards
The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University's salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
