Sabathani Community Center (SCC) is a 58-year-old African American institution and nonprofit serving a multi-cultural community of 50,000 community members in South Minneapolis. SCC was founded in 1966 by a handful of concerned community members seeking to address social and economic disparities in underserved communities in the areas of youth programming, housing, health and education. Wages & Benefits

$31.25 per hour; Generous paid time off (PTO), plus 11 paid holidays and two floating holidays; competitive health, dental, and vision insurance; Health Savings Account (HSA), and options for Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA). There is employer paid basic life insurance with the option for additional coverage paid by the employee. The employer pays for Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) and short- and long-term disability insurance. SCC sponsors a retirement plan with 4% employer match and immediate vesting,

Schedule

Hybrid schedule with two remote days per week for administrative and planning work. Flexible hours within reason, with core availability during standard business hours. Occasional evening or weekend commitments for outreach events or community gatherings (advanced notice provided).

A Typical Day in the Life...

A typical day as Sabathani's Prevention and Engagement Coordinator provides an opportunity to lead a community coalition in South Minneapolis to prevent youth substance use by organizing partnerships, engaging stakeholders, and implementing evidence-based strategies aligned with state goals. Responsibilities will include the following:

Coalition Development & Facilitation



  • Bring together a diverse coalition of youth, parents, educators, service providers, and community leaders to build shared vision and action.
  • Plan and facilitate meaningful meetings that support collaboration and community-led decision-making using the Communities That Care (CTC) model.
  • Organize planning workshops and trainings that empower community members and partners.
  • Keep everyone connected with clear documentation, communication systems, and updates.
  • Support working groups in reaching coalition goals by coordinating efforts and assigning roles.
  • Provide regular updates to SCC leadership and keep external partners in the loop.


Community Assessment & Engagement



  • Lead the effort to gather meaningful data by coordinating youth surveys with local schools.
  • Analyze data on risk and protective factors to guide community strategies.
  • Listen to community voices through outreach and listening sessions, with a focus on BIPOC neighborhoods.
  • Share key findings with community members, funders, and partners in accessible and engaging ways.
  • Identify gaps in services and emerging needs, ensuring community voices shape solutions.
  • Build strong, trust-based relationships with culturally specific organizations, schools, local government, and community members.
  • Connect directly with youth, residents, businesses, and grassroots groups to foster authentic community relationships.


Program Implementation & Support



  • Work alongside the community board to choose and roll out evidence-based prevention programs that meet local needs.
  • Track program progress and outcomes using Salesforce, making sure data is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Develop outreach materials that reflect the cultural and linguistic diversity of South Minneapolis youth and families.
  • Provide training and support to program staff and partners to ensure successful implementation.
  • Monitor program fidelity and support continuous improvement for greater community impact.


Administrative Support



  • Help with grant reporting and budget tracking, working closely with the Director of Health Equity.
  • Draft evaluation summaries and provide regular updates to internal teams.
  • Participate in trainings and technical assistance sessions offered by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH).
  • Support the coordination of logistics for meetings, events, and trainings to keep things running smoothly.


Who You Are



  • You possess a high School diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • You have two or more years of experience in youth development, coalition building, or community engagement
  • You understand the bigger picture-how substance use impacts youth and how social determinants like housing, income, and community support play a role.
  • You know how to bring people together, whether it's leading a group, collaborating with partners, or working as part of a team.
  • You have real experience working with BIPOC youth and families, approaching every interaction with respect, empathy, and cultural humility.
  • You're a strong communicator who can share information clearly-whether that's through conversation, emails, reports, or presentations.
  • You're familiar with community resources and know how to help youth and families navigate systems to get the support they need.
  • You have hands-on experience and/or formal training related to substance use prevention and intervention.
  • You're comfortable using tools like MS Office, Salesforce, and data analysis platforms to support your work.
  • You're flexible and ready to show up for evening or weekend community events when needed, and you adapt easily to change.
  • You maintain healthy boundaries and always show up with professionalism, even in tough situations.
  • You're organized and proactive-good at juggling priorities, solving problems, and finding creative solutions.
  • Above all, you're a good listener who meets people with empathy and builds trust through genuine, compassionate connection.
  • You will be able to travel locally within Minneapolis for community outreach and partnership development. No overnight or out-of-state travel will be required.
  • Preferably, you have a valid driver's license, access to reliable transportation, and the ability to meet Sabathani's driving record requirements. Please note that if the license was not issued in the state of Minnesota, you have 60 days after becoming a Minnesota resident in which to apply for your Minnesota driver's license or permit (not applicable for new hires living out of state).
