Job Description
*This position is for 12 hour Night Shift - weekends required Starting pay rate: $28.00 per hour Job Summary: Shift Leads coordinates production activities in a safe, profitable, and efficient manner through proper utilization of assigned manpower, materials, equipment, and space. Responsible for coordinating all activities within their scope of control and for setting priorities necessary to accomplish predetermined goals, including customer requirements. Supervises maintenance personnel in the absence of the Maintenance Manager. Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
- Directs the manufacturing and material handling activities on a given shift. Trains and supervises hourly employees in these activities; administers plant rules and procedures; recommends employees and candidates for hire, promotion, demotion, transfer, disciplinary action and/or termination; responsible for overall talent management and employee engagement; cultivates an environment of safety, high performance, and ethical and legal compliance.
- Effectively coordinates the work schedule within the department to prevent idle time, and provide for the optimal use of manpower, machinery, and material. This includes the proper use of any established work standards and/or incentive plans. Responsible for scheduling and controlling overtime. Responsible for coordinating direct reports breaks, lunches, etc.
- Maintains standards of quality to meet customer and internal specifications. Strives for continuous improvement in quality performance through proper training, good communication, effective leadership/supervision, and follow-up with all members of the shift.
- Has authority to stop machines/production to communicate safety issues, machine problems and breakdowns to Site Manager.
- Inspects product for quality defects. Has authority to stop production due to product safety and quality issues, place product on hold, and communicate non-conformances to Site Manager and/or Operations Supervisor.
- Maintains safe working conditions throughout the plant by coaching, training, and taking corrective action on unsafe conditions or acts. Serves as a member of the Plant Safety Committee. Implements all approved safety recommendations, and ensures compliance with established safety standards, including lockout/tagout, hearing conversation and other programs required by law or management. Immediately report any unsafe acts, conditions, or accidents.
- Effectively handles employee complaints, suggestions, questions, and conflicts in a respectful and professional manner, and in accordance with the guidelines established in the Employee Handbook and other Company policy/procedure. Maintains employee morale and discipline through fairness and impartiality.
- Responsible for reporting production information at the end of the shift (SPC, Tier Boards, SCADA).
- Assists in the review of labor and manufacturing costs as they relate to production. Analyzes, pursues and recommends methods for reducing these costs.
- Coordinates the implementation of any approved material or method changes. Responsible for communicating these changes to production personnel and follows-up to ensure understanding and proper implementation.
- Communicates effectively with forklift operators to reduce movement.
- Assists Process Technician in determining raw material for production (by date, weight, resin etc.)
- Responsible for blow mold inventory count at the end shift.
- Communicates with maintenance department to determine downtime for PM's, Breakdowns, etc.
- Ability to interpret data and make process changes as needed.
- Keeps current on technical developments and changes to appraise or make recommendations to management and supervisors and to instruct and train employees.
- Leads by example, which includes filling in where needed on the production floor, helps cover vacant shifts, set the example of good teamwork and work ethic, including good attendance.
- Product Safety regarding cleanliness and notification of any observations that may create a product safety risk to our customers.
- Performs daily duties assigned by the Site Manager.
- Completes computer-based training in a timely manner.
- Able to comply with OSHA regulations.
- Able to work modified shift, including 12-hour shifts day or nights, including weekends and holidays
Qualifications:
- Education: High School Diploma or GED
- Some post-secondary education preferred (technical or vocational education) in Business Mgt, or Mfg
- 3 years of experience in a manufacturing setting preferred.
Competencies:
- Ability to communicate professionally, respectfully, and effectively with all members of the shift, as well as with customers and Management.
- Capable of managing and training all members of the shift on an on-going basis.
- A strong mathematical ability is essential.
- Ability to visually and mentally make priority decisions and independent judgment calls based on the situation at hand.
- Ability to use a computer and related software efficiently and effectively.
- Ability to work all shifts and required overtime.
