Position Description:

In the role of a Research System Manager you will be working in our Research Office.

Purpose

The Office of Research helps to facilitate life-saving biomedical research at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Nine distinct units provide specialized support to meet the administrative needs of our investigators and research staff, and together we coordinate, regulate, and monitor research studies. Within our Research Systems unit, our development team provides front and back end support for the institutions primary research applications, including the institutional research approval submission system, eBridge.

The Research Systems Manager, Development, oversees the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the College's research administration information systems as well as ancillary research administration support systems. The Manager develops system solutions to achieve strategic goals and improve processes, and provides leadership, vision and management for the Research Application development team.

Primary Functions

  • As a member of the leadership team, participate in the Research Systems unit decision making and strategic planning process representing technology concerns.
  • Formulate and implement approved goals and objectives, plans and budget for the development team in accordance with strategic planning process representing technology concerns.
  • Partner with Research Applications Director to advance Research Administration systems, strategies and initiatives that support mission objectives and lead the development team on all Research Administration projects.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of development team. Mentor, coach and direct developers to ensure that procedures are followed and system and users are receiving timely and quality support. Supervise direct reports' work priorities and resolve conflicts. Coordinate work efforts and resource needs with Director.
  • Maintain awareness of trends in Research Administration software enhancements. Identify, direct, and oversee execution of projects for development team. Solicit feedback and identify requirements from end users. Serve as an expert in research systems capability and functionality.
  • Facilitate the project feasibility/justification process. Oversee the planning, analysis, design, construction, implementation and closure processes which include development of the scope of work and the management of time, cost, risk, communications, resources, contracts and quality of projects. Communicate regularly and at the appropriate level of detail with the key project stakeholders regarding the status of specific projects.
  • Direct the maintenance, testing and installation of a project. Ensure all prescribed processes are followed and that project documentation is up to date.
  • Partner with Information Systems to ensure complete integration of systems, functionality, and full system implementation life cycle.
  • Develop and maintain system policies and procedures ensuring consistency of reporting and data integrity.
  • Perform supervisory functions including interviewing, selecting, training and performance appraisal of staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge - Skills - Abilities

Task/Project Management - Able to independently manage assigned projects and tasks to accurately complete them within budget and by the due date with high customer satisfaction. Able to manage multiple developers across several projects at once. Able to work independently and ask for technical assistance only when needed. Able to identify, estimate, and complete tasks required for the project.

Personnel Management - Able to coach and mentor staff to maintain high employee morale, provide training and growth opportunities and resolve personnel conflicts. Recognizes, encourages, and communicates individual and team contributions. Able to manage and address performance issues.

Technical Skills - Demonstrates a strong background in software development and comprehensive knowledge of software development lifecycle and methodologies. Must have a general understanding of database concepts and all other development languages used within the department. Must be able to design good user interfaces. Must understand and follow development standards. Must be able to provide input to develop and improve the development standards. Must be able to effectively test or lead the test on applications to provide for a quality system.

Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Strong critical thinking, problem solving and attentiveness to detail required. General knowledge of current operating systems and applications is important to this position, as is familiarity with relevant database system.

All remote work must be performed within one of the MCW registered payroll states, which currently includes: WI, AZ, FL, IL, IN, MD, MI, MN, MO, NC, TN,TX, and UT.

Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis

Minimum Required Education: Bachelor's degree in Business/Computer Science

Minimum Required Experience: 8 years related experience

Preferred Education: Master's degree in Business/Computer Science

Target salary range for this position is between $98,200.00 and $125,900.00 annually. The final offered salary will depend on the applicant's education, experience, skills, and knowledge, as well as considerations of internal equity and market alignment.
