What We Need:
We are looking for a Product Sustainability Engineer to join our HNI Workplace Furnishings team. This position is located in Muscatine, Iowa. Relocation assistance may be provided.
The role is responsible fordeveloping, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive product-level sustainability program that directly supports our corporate ESG and product sustainability objectives and regulatory commitments. You will build and govern a structured sustainability framework - complete with processes, data governance, workbooks, and scorecards, to ensure every new product integrates carbon, energy, material, and circular-economy considerations from concept through launch.
What You Will Do:
- Participate and contribute to the development, implementation, and monitoring of comprehensive sustainability strategies aligned with the company's environmental, social, and governance (ESC) goals, and regulatory requirements, and long-term environmental goals.
- Develop, build and maintain a structured sustainability framework, process, workbook, data governance, reviews and approvals processes to ensure every new product development project consistently integrates environmental considerations, such as, carbon footprint, energy efficiency, material selection, and circular economy from concept through launch.
- Collaborate and coordinate with Internal stakeholders (e.g. Sustainability, Product Engineering, Marketing, Supply Chain) to manage and develop our sustainability materials database and product certifications.
- Ensure data completeness and provide support for product certifications such as Full Material Disclosures (FMDs), Health Product Declarations (HPDs), Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), Declare Labels (DL), Life-Cycle-Assessment (LCA), BIFMA, Scope 1-3 goals, PFAS elimination, GHG and carbon reduction.
- Develop and maintain Sustainability Scorecards to ensure real-time visibility into progress.
- Coordinate with external Sustainability Tool partners, such as Sphera and 3E, on Project deliverables and providing necessary product and material data.
- Support identifying and implementing new technologies, materials and solutions to enhance product sustainability. Benchmark against industry best practices to drive continuous improvement.
- Plan & manage projects to comply with regulatory and corporate requirements for sustainability.
- Work with global team for implementation of various initiatives and work towards global sustainability goals.
- Support and coordinate consulting projects addressing Life Cycle Assessment and product sustainability strategy.
- Perform continual assessments on emerging industry's best practices and regulations in product sustainability and advise HNI Workplace Furnishings team with potential improvement opportunities.
- Participate in activities as appropriate to ensure the success of the organization.
What You Have:
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field preferred.
- Professional credentials such as LEED AP, or related sustainability and project-management are a plus.
- At least one year of experience required; three years of experience in product sustainability or environmental compliance within a product development, design or manufacturing environment preferred.
- Knowledge of BIFMA standards, chemical-compliance databases, product sustainability compliance standards and emerging regulatory requirements preferred.
