I. JOB OVERVIEW


Job Description Summary:
The Center for Career Services is GW's central career services office supporting students and alumni in their career and professional development. Through personal career coaching, specialized programs, premier internship opportunities, and connections with top-tier employers, they help students realize and advance their career and professional goals. The career services team is committed to creating an anti-racist, innovative, energized, and positive environment for staff, students, and alumni to discover their best selves.

The Career Development Manager, GWSPH plays a leadership role in addressing the career preparation needs of undergraduate students enrolled in GW's School of Public Health ( GWSPH). Embedded within the school and co-reported to a member of the Dean's leadership team, the Career Development Manager works directly with students, GWSPH constituents, and the Center for Career Services ( CCS) to develop the school's career readiness goals and strategies/plans to accomplish them. This individual will partner with academic departments on the development of career readiness initiatives that may be integrated into the curricula of various academic programs; this includes but is not limited to a professional competencies framework ( NACE Career Readiness Competencies), that complements academic learning outcomes. In addition to the oversight provided by the School of Public Health, the Career Development Manager will report to the center's Director of Career Academic Partnerships.

The Career Development Manager, GWSPH will perform the following duties:

  • Develop a plan to achieve the career preparation goals for students within the host college in collaboration with the Dean's leadership team.
  • Collaborate with GWSPH unit heads to leverage resources and services relevant to goals, including career coaching, events management, and employer relations.
  • Identify and create resources that address the unique interests of GWSPH students, design workshops and career events tailored to GWSPH students, and provide advising in both individual and group appointments.
  • Work with GWSPH school leadership to pilot an Internship Career Course.
  • Track the success of GWSPH students, assess the effectiveness of services and programs, and author periodic reports for the dean's leadership team.
  • Collaborate with development and alumni relations officers to engage GWSPH alumni participants in career panels, mentoring roles, and recruitment efforts.
  • Partner with counterparts in GWSPH and other schools/colleges on joint career initiatives and strategize with host school on employer development targets.
  • Compile and present reports to host school leadership documenting the progress of initiatives.
  • Engage with faculty for in-class career readiness presentations and collaborate on target programs/events.
  • Provide support for SPH's student success/retention projects, utilizing career competencies priorities.
  • Represent host-school career readiness priorities to parents, advisory board members, and other constituents.


The Career Development Manager's primary office will be in the school, but a landing space will be maintained in the Center for Career Services. The position is based at GW's Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 3 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in counseling, human resources, or a related field is preferred.
  • Progressively responsible professional experience in employer relations and development, human resources, corporate recruiting, project management, customer service, higher education, or related fields is desired.
  • Technical proficiency with databases, spreadsheets, and management systems including career services management systems such as Handshake preferred.
  • Strong communication, presentation, writing, project management, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Experience with managing budgets and other resources is desired.
  • Supervisory and service management experience preferred.
  • Appreciation for, and experience with, working in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.

Hiring Range $64,483.58 - $88,679.60
