BTEC also provides bioprocess development and analytical services to a wide range of customers from academia and industry. |
Essential Job Duties |
The Director of Operations is responsible for ensuring that
BTEC can meet its course commitments, its bioprocess/analytical services commitments, and its research commitments. Specifically, this position ensures that the facility is equipped, maintained, and staffed to properly support all center activities, and that facility schedules are met. To accomplish this, the Director of Operations must have significant expertise in bioprocessing and be capable of managing staff responsible for running the Upstream Operations group, Downstream Operations group, Central Services group, Facilities Engineering group, Bioprocess Automation group, and the Analytical group. The Director of Operations must also work with BTEC's Executive Director to develop and implement new programs. He/she also has significant course development and teaching responsibilities in the area of bioprocessing.
Essential Job Duties Include but are not limited to the following:
- Develop and deliver courses to North Carolina State University undergraduate and graduate students in subject matter related to biomanufacturing.
- Develop and deliver short courses to industry professionals.
- Manage staff responsible for running BTEC's Upstream Operations group, Downstream Operations group, Central Services group, Facilities Engineering group, Bioprocess Automation group, and Analytical group. Advise/mentor undergraduate and graduate students in bioprocessing projects.
- Write job descriptions, recruit candidates, and hire new employees into BTEC's Operations group.
- Assist the Executive Director in developing new BTEC initiatives, including academic courses and curricula, short course training programs, industry relations and contracts and grants.
- Assist the Executive Director in presenting and explaining BTEC facilities and programs to external and internal constituencies such as NCBIO, NCBC, the legislature, colleges and universities, and foreign institutions.
- Assist the Executive Director in planning BTEC budget for the use of state allocations and funds from contracts, grants, gifts, and testing and services agreements.
- Facilitate BTEC's All-Center Meetings and other relevant operations meetings.
- Write policies and procedures for the Operations area.
- Advise/mentor undergraduate and graduate students in bioprocessing projects.
- Write proposals that provide funding for technology development, educational initiatives, etc.
- Publish and/or present technical and/or teaching advancements related to bioprocessing.
- Participate in activities to promote and support BTEC's mission and vision both internally and external to the University toward gaining national recognition for BTEC.
- Provide ongoing service to BTEC and/or the university (e.g., identify/coordinate seminar speakers, advise an organization (e.g., ISPE), serve on BTEC or university committees, support contract services).

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Requires a Ph.D. in a relevant engineering or life sciences field with at least 8 years of experience relevant to job duties.
- Degree must be received prior to hiring date

Other Required Qualifications |
- Good written and verbal communication skills, and particularly the ability to present information clearly and concisely in oral and written form to a variety of audiences, ranging from university students to experienced industry professionals.
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work with different groups within BTEC, students, faculty and staff from the university, and professionals from industry and government organizations.
- Effective problem-solving skills and the ability to be innovative when needed.
- Well-developed operational and theoretical knowledge of technologies being managed, including application and communication of concepts and theory
- Ability to work independently and as a team member, and the experience to know when one is more appropriate than the other.
- Capable of being flexible and managing change.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety and biosafety practices.
- Proficiency with Google Workspace and MS Office suite, specifically MS Word, MS Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Prior experience in teaching at the college level.
- Prior experience in developing/delivering courses to professionals.
- Experience working in cGMP biomanufacturing and/or bioprocess development.
