Cranbrook Kingswood Middle School for Boys seeks an enthusiastic and creative full-time Middle School 8th Grade Science Teacher with an innovative approach to content delivery and skills development. This individual will play a vital role in our engaging and hands-on middle school science program, which cultivates curiosity and exploration.

About the Science Program at Cranbrook Middle School for Boys:

Our program offers a dynamic learning environment that extends beyond the classroom, leveraging Cranbrook's unique campus to create relevant, place-based learning experiences. We aim to inspire critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a lifelong love of science through:



  • Hands-on learning: Actively engaging students in scientific inquiry.
  • Real-world connections: Integrating technology and practical applications.
  • Developmentally appropriate curriculum:
  • Grade 6 - Developing (Life Science): Ecology, cell biology, DNA, and classification, emphasizing observation, inference, data organization, and drawing conclusions.
  • Grade 7 - Engaging (Earth and Space Science): Geology, plate tectonics, geologic time, astronomy, and meteorology, with a focus on current events and real-time data analysis.
  • Grade 8 - Applying (Physical Science): Introduction to chemistry and physics, including matter, atomic structure, the periodic table, chemical formulas and reactions, motion, forces, and friction, with an emphasis on hands-on lab work.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:



  • Teach four sections of 8th grade physical science.
  • Facilitate student learning by building strong interpersonal relationships, setting a positive tone, and creating a sense of belonging and community among the students.
  • Serve as a student advisor to a group of students, meeting daily and providing guidance and support.
  • Advocating for students and nurturing their growth, assessing students' progress, partnering with parents, participating in grade level activities to build relationships and community and foster empathy and leadership, including an overnight interim.
  • Participate and collaborate in grade level teams, content teams, faculty meetings, and school assemblies.
  • Contribute to the extra-curricular life of the school by leading an after-school club, sport or activity.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues to create powerful learning experiences for a diverse student body.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to work in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
  • Engage in social emotional learning (SEL) initiatives


Requirements:



  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field is required.
  • Master's degree and/or teaching certificate and teaching experience is preferred.
  • Enthusiasm for teaching and working with adolescents is essential.
  • Excellent communication skills are expected.
  • Experience with robotics, athletics, or other extracurricular programs is beneficial.
  • Requires a valid Michigan driver's license with satisfactory driving record.
