Position Summary

The Executive Director, Islamic Center and University Chaplain provides strategic vision, leadership, and oversight of the Islamic Center at NYU. This role is responsible for developing Muslim student religious life at New York University. The Executive Director is expected to lead religious services, provide pastoral care and oversee holiday programming, while fostering a supportive environment that increases religious literacy and cultivates a sense of belonging for diverse Muslim communities on campus. Serve as a religious leader on behalf of the Islamic Center at NYU and hire contractors to fill religious leadership that support the diverse religious needs of the Muslim community. Job responsibilities will include spearheading and prioritizing Muslim student religious life on the New York University campus and offering consultation with global sites to strengthen Muslim student observance preparedness when needed. Responsible for providing religious literacy and educational training, workshops, events, and retreats for the University community that speak to the depth of various sects of the Muslim community, as well as pastoral counseling and serving as an advisor to Muslim student groups. Collaborate with University Development and Alumni Relations to identify, track, assess, and steward fundraising and giving opportunities that support the Islamic Center's work. Work with Global Spiritual Life to implement the Interfaith at NYU initiative through interfaith community-building alongside crucial stakeholders.

Qualifications

Required Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Islamic Studies, Religious Studies, or a related field, with formal religious seminary studies (advanced knowledge of Quran and Hadith text, Islamic law and jurisprudence, ethics and spirituality).

Preferred Education:
Master's Degree in relevant field (Islamic Studies, Higher Education, Non-Profit Management, etc.)

Required Experience:
7+ years serving as an Islamic religious leader with experience working with high school and/or college age students in an academic and co-curricular setting. Religious Leadership skills should include strong communication skills to offer Islam literacy and services for all denominations. Proven record of strong community building, student engagement and communication skills to the student body and senior leadership when needed. Experience with pastoral Care (1:1 or group). Fundraising experience and experience supporting and participating in interfaith cooperation amongst colleagues within an institution.

Preferred Experience:
7+ years serving as an Islamic religious leader within an institution of higher education.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Thorough knowledge of Islamic religious practices and ability to offer literacy when needed to broader NYU community. Collaborative leadership skills, organizational management skills, and crisis management.



Additional Information

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is USD $92,000.00 to USD $132,000.00. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
