The City of Renton's Planning team is recruiting for a Current Planning professional at the Assistant, Associate, or Senior level to join us. The planning positions will perform a variety of planning duties based on the position such as development review, development regulation amendments, comprehensive plan updates, State Environmental Policy Act compliance, researching and interpreting data, and preparing studies and reports. This position is part of a series; placement at the Assistant, Associate or Senior level depends on the education, experience, and skill set of the incumbent. Distinguishing characteristics:
- The Assistant Planner classification performs research and support duties for other planners and maintains records, prepares data, and responds to customer inquiries regarding assigned projects.
- The Associate Planner classification performs limited scope projects independently and supports the planning function in responding to customer inquiries in person or on the telephone.
- The Senior Planner is the experienced level classification. Incumbents perform complex projects independently and lead teams of planners on assigned projects. Senior Planners make presentations before the City Council, Planning Commission and others regarding assigned projects.

Telework Program The City of Renton supports workers performing in a hybrid capacity (partial telework/in-office) where job responsibilities can be performed remotely. This position may be eligible for a telework arrangement, up to two (2) days remote, based on the operational needs of the City and specific Department. Regardless of job title or telework arrangement, City of Renton employees must reside in Washington State and within a reasonable distance to their worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Assistant Planner Level:
- Collect, compile and analyze data on local social and economic trends, population characteristics, land use and capital improvement projects.
- Collect information from other departments and agencies for use in planning projects.
- Evaluate land use proposals referred by other departments.
- Prepare written reports on the comprehensive plan and related planning problems, including annexations.
- Provide staff assistance to the Planning Commission for preparation of comprehensive plans, land use policies and regulations.
- Present planning proposals and background information at public meetings.
- Respond to public and interdepartmental inquiries.
- Prepare graphic displays, maps and photographs.
Associate Planner Level:
- Research, analyze and prepare reports on long-range planning issues including changes to the Comprehensive Plan and other land development policies and standards.
- Research, prepare and present staff reports on current planning issues for the Planning Commission, City Council and other City boards and commissions.
- Compose, edit and prepare a variety of written materials including reports, discussion papers, graphics and other materials.
- Collect, analyze and interpret social, economic, demographic and land use data and summarize in report form.
- Enforce zoning and land use regulations and other ordinances as required, including discussing complaints with members of the public, following up with field visits and related correspondence.
Senior Planner Level:
- Plan, organize, coordinate, and participate in major long range and current municipal planning projects and activities.
- Perform complex planning tasks and act as lead on high profile projects; demonstrate advanced level knowledge and work independently keeping supervisor apprised of project and/or workload status.
- Train and provide work direction to assigned project personnel; assure the timely and proper completion of work.
- Prepare complex and technical staff reports for Comprehensive Plan updates, zoning ordinance revision, sub area plans, land use policies, environmental impact, implementation of new legislation and related issues.
- Prepare complex and technical staff reports for land use decision recommendations for the City's Hearing Examiner and Planning Director.
- Prepare complex and technical staff reports for SEPA threshold determinations.
- Coordinate interdepartmental review and review by outside agencies of long-range planning and policy issues, capital improvement plans including Shoreline Master Plans, Annexation Policy Plans and Transportation Plans; prepare staff reports and make presentations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
Assistant Planner Level:
- Bachelor's degree in Urban or Regional Planning, Urban Studies, Geography, Environmental Science or closely related field.
- Or 4 years of relevant education and/or experience.
- Valid Driver's License and successful passing of a required driving record check.
- Successful passing of a required background check.
Associate Planner Level:
- Bachelor's degree in Urban or Regional Planning, Urban Studies, Geography, Environmental Science or closely related field.
- Minimum 2 years of municipal planning experience.
- Or minimum 6 years of relevant education and experience.
- Valid Driver's License and successful passing of a required driving record check.
- Successful passing of a required background check.
Senior Planner Level:
- Bachelor's degree in Urban or Regional Planning, Urban Studies, Geography, Environmental Science or related field.
- 4 years increasingly responsible experience in municipal planning including Comprehensive Planning, environmental analysis, development of land use policy, zoning implementation, plan review, and permit processing.
- Or minimum 8 years of relevant education and experience.
- Valid Driver's License and successful passing of a required driving record check.
- Successful passing of a required background check.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Drive to offsite locations to perform essential functions.
- Move throughout City facilities and buildings.
- Operate a computer and other office equipment.
- Communicate with City employees and residents.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is performed in an office environment and occasionally outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Work evening and/or weekend hours as needed.
- Noise level in the office is moderately quiet and noise level out in the field is moderately loud.
- Night meetings may be required

Recruitment Process: The screening process will include a review of minimum qualifications and applicants selected for an interview will be invited via email to self-schedule a time through the Government Jobs account. This position requires driving and is also subject to a driving record check from the WA State Dept of Licensing (or other state equivalent). Driving records will be evaluated based on a points system depending on the infraction and severity.
