Description

The Salon and Spa Director for the Cosmetology, Aesthetics, and Nail programs is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the student salon, providing leadership and direction to students and faculty, while ensuring compliance with all state board regulations and industry standards. This position manages a comprehensive salon that offers hair, nail, and esthetician services, playing a critical role in bridging educational goals with practical, hands-on salon experience for students across all cosmetology disciplines. The Salon and Spa Director serves as a mediator among faculty, not just addressing conflicts as they arise, but also proactively creating an environment that minimizes conflict through collaboration and clear communication.


Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities (include, but not limited to)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Salon Operations

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the student salon and spa, including scheduling, inventory control, and maintenance of equipment
  • Supervise and provide direction to Instructional Assistants to ensure safe and efficient operation of salons
  • Oversee client scheduling, check-in/check-out procedures, and maintain client records for hair, nail, and esthetician services
  • Monitor and maintain a clean, safe, and professional salon environment across all service areas
  • Implement and enforce all safety, sanitation, and infection control protocols per state regulations for cosmetology, nail technology, and esthetics
  • Manage salon inventory, including ordering supplies, monitoring product usage, and maintaining appropriate stock levels for all service types
  • Oversee cash handling procedures, salon revenue, and financial reporting
Student Development
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for addressing student performance and behavior issues within the salon environment
  • Supervise and guide students during their salon floor experiences
  • Provide constructive feedback to the faculty and Dean on student performance and professionalism
  • Assist instructors in evaluating students' practical skills and client interactions
  • Help faculty identify students who may need additional support
  • Model professional salon conduct, customer service, and technical skills
Faculty Collaboration and Curriculum Support
  • Work closely with cosmetology, nail technology, and esthetics faculty to ensure curriculum objectives are reflected in salon operations
  • Serve as a facilitator to address and resolve conflicts among faculty members to ensure a positive working and learning environment
  • Participate in curriculum review and development to maintain industry relevance across all service disciplines
  • Coordinate with instructors to develop effective strategies for student learning in the salon environment
  • Provide input on industry trends and practices to enhance curriculum content for all program areas
  • Assist in identifying and implementing new techniques and services for student learning
  • Support faculty in assessment of student performance and competency development
  • Facilitate regular communication between salon operations and classroom instruction
  • Contribute to program advisory committee meetings and accreditation activities
Client Relations
  • Ensure exceptional client service throughout the salon experience
  • Handle client concerns and feedback professionally and effectively
  • Develop strategies to build and maintain a steady client base
  • Create and implement salon promotions to attract new clients
  • Coordinate and collaborate with College Recruitment and Marketing teams to arrange tours and recruitment activities for the salon and spa
  • Maintain positive community relations and promote the program's services
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate records of student hours and services performed
  • Ensure compliance with all state board regulations and accreditation standards
  • Participate in department meetings and contribute to curriculum development
  • Assist with salon budget planning and resource allocation
  • Generate regular reports on salon performance, client retention, and student progress
  • Assist the Instructional Manager with scheduling

Minimum Qualifications

Required

  • Current state cosmetology license with a minimum of 3 years of professional experience
  • Previous salon management or supervisory experience (2+ years preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of salon operations, inventory management, and financial procedures
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to train, motivate, and supervise others
  • Proficiency with salon management software and point-of-sale systems
  • Understanding of state board regulations and health/safety requirements
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Experience with budget management and financial reporting
  • Knowledge of current industry trends and techniques

Education
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Business Management or related field
  • Cosmetology instructor license preferred
  • Experience in an educational setting or teaching capacity
  • Additional certifications in specialized services (color, texture, etc.)
  • Cosmetology or Aesthetics license is required

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Capable of demonstrating various cosmetology services
  • May require lifting up to 25 pounds (supplies, equipment)
  • Manual dexterity and ability to work with various products and tools

Work Schedule
  • Full-time position (40 hours/week)
  • May require some evening hours to accommodate student salon schedule
  • Occasional weekend availability may be necessary

Supplemental Information

The Salon & Spa Director supports the Education and Human Services department and will be available to start on or before July 16, 2025.

Salary
Salary will be determined based on the candidate's years of relevant experience and an internal equity review to ensure consistency within the WCTC's compensation structure.
