Position Summary

The University of New Mexico Student Health & Counseling Clinic (SHAC) is recruiting for a knowledgeable, detail-oriented Group Manager of Medical Coding to manage and coordinate the day-to-day activities of the medical billing and coding operations group within the Student Health & Counseling Clinic. This position participates in the development and implementation of operating policies and procedures, as appropriate, to the objectives of the unit. Prepares financial and/or operational analyses and reports, and audits current procedures to monitor and improve efficiency of operations. Manages a diverse team of patient accounts staff, including one or more subordinates.

The Student Health & Counseling Center is located at the center of campus. The clinic provides comprehensive primary and mental health services and has a laboratory, x-ray, pharmacy, physical therapy, massage, acupuncture, case management, and health promotions on site. Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 2 years of experience managing at least one of the following functional areas: fiscal services, administration and/or human resources AND 3 years of additional experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications

Some of the specific duties & responsibilities of this position will include:

  • Oversees the supervision of personnel, which includes work allocation, training, enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution. Evaluates performance of the team and makes recommendations on personnel actions; motivates team to achieve peak productivity and produce quality work.
  • Oversees the medical coding and billing of multiple clinical departments within the unit. At SHAC this includes Gen Med, Physical Therapy, Counseling, Laboratory Services, Allergy & Immunizations, Pharmacy, and Acupuncture
  • Serves as the principal liaison with manager and administrators of assigned clinical departments related to day-to-day coding and billing activities. At SHAC, this includes working closely with medical coders/billers and healthcare providers to ensure accurate and ethical coding/billing practices.
  • Ensures that the medical/billing coding team is following all federal, state, and payer regulations, guidelines, and requirements.
  • Reviews and interprets applicable data to assess needs for procedural revisions and enhancements; participates in the design and implementation of specific systems to enhance revenue and operating efficiency. Which includes audits on documentation.
  • Provides advice and assistance to senior management in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of any modifications to medical coding/billing.
  • Provides, oversees, and conducts the training for new and existing coding/billing staff on applicable coding procedures, standards, and techniques. Provides remedial training and one-on-one coaching to staff who struggle with certain coding/billing concepts.
  • Keeps up to date with changes and trends in medical coding/billing standards and regulations.
  • Answers inquires and clarifies any issues related to medical coding/billing.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
