Bay Cove pursues this mission by providing individualized and compassionate services to people facing the challenges associated with developmental disabilities, mental illness, substance use disorders, and homelessness at more than 175 program sites throughout Greater Boston and Southeastern Massachusetts.

Job Summary:

As an integral part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team supporting individuals in treatment and recovery from opioid use disorder, the Dispensing Nurse skilled nursing care and ensures high quality, safe, and efficient dispensing of medication under the direction of medical practitioners. The Dispensing Nurse contributes to Bay Cove's mission by bringing a trauma-informed and non-judgmental approach to the treatment of individuals in recovery. This is a non-exempt position.

The schedule for this position is Tuesday 5:30a-4:30p, Sat & Sun 5:30a-11:30a (23 hours, part-time).

Essential Functions of Position:




  • Utilize clinical judgment to accurately review, interpret, enter, and execute medication orders based on patient assessment, most recent toxicology reports, and ongoing communications with other interdisciplinary members of the team.



  • Conduct initial intake for new or returning clients including taking client history and vital signs, performing 12 lead ECG and phlebotomy, starting, managing, and discontinuing a peripheral IV, facilitating urine specimen and analysis, explaining clinic visit expectations, and scheduling clinic visits.



  • Maintain practical nursing professional standards of care while working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary to provide treatment, including giving and receiving timely updates regarding client wellbeing.



  • Carefully calibrate, use, and maintain automated dispensing system(s) and pumps.



  • Prepare and dispense medication as ordered by medical practitioners in accordance with program policy and medical protocols in an accurate and timely manner.



  • Provide client education per the prescribed plan of care, including education on HIV, Hepatitis B and C, TB, STD and infection control practices.



  • Document the dispensing of medication, nursing care provided, and client progress concisely, accurately, and completely, according to the established protocols.



  • Ensure compliance with security standards for the distribution and storage of controlled substances as set forth in the Code of Federal regulations.



  • Produce and maintain accurate accounting, records, and reports of medications as required by agency protocol, and State and Federal Regulations.



  • Use a trauma-responsive approach when collecting specimens for testing ordered by the medical practitioners and properly process, read, and document results per established protocols.



  • Perform routine assignments independently, seek direction when indicated for unusual or non-routine duties, and advise appropriate personnel of situations requiring additional nursing expertise or technical follow-up.



  • Respond professionally and appropriately in crisis situations.



  • Other job related duties as assigned.




Requirements:




  • Massachusetts registration and license in nursing.



  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.



  • Prefer 1 year nursing experience in the field of behavioral health or addiction treatment.



  • Prior experience in harm reduction and trauma responsive patient care preferred.



  • Prior experience working in an Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) preferred.



  • Demonstrated understanding of medications (opioid agonist, partial agonist, and antagonist) used in outpatient treatment centers for Opioid Use Disorders.



  • Stated willingness to receive training on and provide client education on recurrence prevention, harm reduction, and overdose prevention and intervention.



  • Demonstrated professional commitment to incorporate evidence based practice while delivering care per protocol and nursing practice guidelines.



  • Demonstrated professional writing, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.



  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of basic computer software and functions (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Suite, and necessary specialty platforms such as eHana and SMART).



  • Ongoing detection and interpretation of information on documents, monitors, and labels and accompanying response, as well as to identification of equipment and supplies.



  • Frequent interaction with providers, colleagues, customers, patients/clients, and visitors requiring the employee to communicate, as well as detect and interpret information, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, occasionally during emergency situations.



  • Frequent communication of accurate information, instructions, and ideas so others will understand.



  • Operation of complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent phone and computer use for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.



  • Utilization of the full range of movement to lift, move, or transfer patients up to fifty (50) pounds, as well as assist with weights of more than one-hundred (100) pounds. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment up to twenty (20) pounds.



  • Undertake lifesaving efforts by conducting CPR via the provision of chest compressions and rescue breathing as needed until relieved by medical professionals.



  • Frequent movement throughout the clinic to access, obtain, or distribute supplies (sometimes pushing or pulling equipment), interact with clients/patients, assist in the transport of clients/patients, etc.



  • Remain in a stationary position for an extended period of time as needed.
