Position Summary

El Centro de la Raza works topositively impact the
transition, retention, and graduation of students through an engaging
environment built on academic, cultural, personal, and professional activities.
El Centro houses several programs focused on recruitment, retention, and
graduation for all students, including culturally responsive practices that
benefit Chicanx/Latine/Raza students.

El Centro seeks a bilingual (Spanish & English), approachable,
detail-orientated, energetic individual to join the team. This individual will
work closely with the Sr. Program Manager and the El Centro team to:

  • Design, plan, manage and oversee day-to-day operations of undergraduate retention, recruitment, research and academic excellence programs and initiatives. This includes, but is not limited to, serving as the principal point of representation and managing all aspects of El Puente Research Fellowship from curriculum development, recruitment, and implementation for undergraduate and graduate research fellows.
  • Actively participate in managing the comprehensive functions that encompass daily operations and initiatives within El Centro, grounded in culturally responsive curricular and pedagogical practices.
  • Contribute to the fiscal and operational management of El Centro's co-curricular programs by helping to develop, allocate, reconcile, and ensure compliance with UNM policies as well as state and federal laws for El Centro's main budget. This includes actively fundraising for El Centro by assisting in writing/editing both existing grants and new grant writing initiatives at the institutional, state, and federal level to maintain our overall budget.
  • Actively participate in the design, planning, management and oversight of various El Centro's recruitment and retention initiatives. This includes management, planning and coordinating events with campus partners, as well as aiding with the planning and execution of larger events.
  • Provide individual consultation to students regarding their research projects, academics and professional aspirations as relating to El Puente Research Fellowship as well as general consultations to all students regarding financial aid, admissions, scholarships, and academics.
  • Assist with providing strategic direction to ensure quality, data driven programming student engagement and alignment with a Student Affairs framework emphasizing student belonging, empowerment, and cultural diversity within the UNM campus community.
  • Assist in HR processes such as training, supervising, and coordinating professional development of staff and El Puente instructional team members. Oversee and coach staff members tasked with serving in the areas of retention, recruitment, research and academic excellence programs and initiatives.
  • Represent El Centro on university committees, task forces, and in external community settings to support the success of all students, including Hispanic/Latinx students.
  • Assist in the development and direct campus and community partnership initiatives that celebrate Hispanic/Latinx culture, academic success, and student engagement.

Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 6 years of experience 2 of which are management level experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated
experience in/with:

  • Developing, implementing, and leading culturally responsive curriculum & co-curricular programs within a higher education environment by utilizing Student Affairs and culturally responsive frameworks.
  • Navigating and instructing students through the graduate school exploration & the academic research process. This includes creating original research questions, literature reviews, research proposals, scholarly presentations, and graduate school visits & applications.
  • Advocating for Raza and other historically underrepresented students in higher education, including undocumented and mixed status students and families, through relationship building, collaboration, and direct services.
  • Mentoring & coaching full-time and student staff as well as expertise with UNM HR policies and procedures for hiring & supervising.
  • Developing programmatic data evaluation and report creation.
  • Budget planning inclusive of UNM and state budgeting policies and procedures, as well as leading fundraising activities.
  • Strong writing skills inclusive of producing & delivering bilingual (English and Spanish) documents and presentations, and the ability to review institutional, state, and federal funding proposals/grants.
  • Knowledge of New Mexico and Federal Higher Education policies & departments that affect undocumented and other historically underrepresented students.
