Lunar Permanence: This role is part of the Lunar business unit, which develops Blue Origin's multiple Blue Moon lander product lines. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished team of experts, you will develop and test gas bearings designed for optimal turbomachine performance within cryocoolers used in zero-boiloff (ZBO) applications. Additionally, you will lead gas bearing test asset design and optimization efforts. Your role will be to collaborate with other ZBO team engineers and technicians in the design, development, manufacturing, testing, and troubleshooting of these bearings and the turbomachines that utilize them. This position is based in Kent, WA.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Spearheading the development of turbomachine bearing design, driving component trade studies for design optimization to achieve peak performance.
  • Leading the design and optimization of bearing test assets, innovating to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Contributing to the advancement of the bearing manufacturing process, ensuring excellence from concept to execution.
  • Communicating analytical results effectively, highlighting the impact of design changes on component and system performance for both team and stakeholders.
  • Leading the creation of test plans and procedures for bearing and turboalternator testing, ensuring meticulous attention to detail.
  • Executing test procedures involving complex pressurized cryogenic and non-cryogenic fluid systems, showcasing safety and precision.
  • Reviewing and interpreting test data to assess performance and health at both system and component levels, informing future designs.
  • Authoring comprehensive test reports, providing insights and improvements.
  • Leading design, data, and/or test readiness reviews, guiding projects to successful completion.
  • Ensuring work aligns with Blue Origin's policies and procedures, maintaining our standards of innovation and safety.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace, or Aeronautical Engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience in fluid system development and testing.
  • Expertise in turbomachine design, analysis, and/or testing, including experience in gas bearing development from design to tested prototypes.
  • Strong command of fluid flow fundamentals, with a keen eye for detail and precision.
  • Proficiency in data-reduction and analysis.
  • Experience in materials & processes, including statistical process control.
  • Proficiency in GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and tolerance analysis.
  • Strong skills in developing, writing, and updating technical procedures, standards, and specifications.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal skills, fostering effective communication and collaboration.
  • Desire to take ownership of projects, demonstrating a proactive approach.
  • Commitment to safety, contributing to a culture of caution and care.
  • Ability and eagerness to understand complex systems, tackle challenging problems, and thrive in a dynamic environment.

Compensation Range for:

WA applicants is $140,959.00-$197,342.25
