The DNALC is a pioneer in public genetics education. Established in 1988, it is the world's first science center dedicated solely to genetics education, serving over 30,000 pre-college students each year through school field trips, summer camps, and student research programs. The DNA Learning Center in Brooklyn (DNALC-NYC) of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is currently seeking multiple college-level interns to provide laboratory assistance for summer camp programs, with the possibility to stay on for the school year. Successful candidates will become part of a collaborative team, which requires strong communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work closely with others as well as independently in the lab. DNALC college interns are expected to help prepare and maintain various equipment and reagents necessary to providing a quality genetics education to students in middle school and above. This position requires the intern to provide laboratory assistance to the educational staff of the DNALC.

Position Responsibilities
-
- Perform wet laboratory prep work and testing of experimental materials and reagents for field trips, faculty training, student research, and other local programs.
- Independently operate scientific equipment.
- Implement scientific documentation and record keeping.
- Maintain bacterial strains, laboratory space, and equipment.
- Classroom upkeep, equipment setup, and inventory management.
- Assist educational staff during classroom instruction, lunch, and drop-off/pick-up of students.

Position Requirements

Education: Currently enrolled at a college or university as a STEM major. Preference given to CUNY students. Experience: Proficiency in preparing reagents, sterile technique, and scientific record keeping preferred, but not expected. Other: Ability to work a minimum of 10 hours per week during the school year, 15 hours per week in the summer. Must be at least 18 years of age.

Compensation
The hourly rate for this role is $18.00
