Purpose of Position |
The School of the Arts at Northern Kentucky University invites applications for a full-time, Assistant Teaching Professor (non-tenure track), in Technical Theatre within the Theatre & Dance program, beginning fall 2025. Faculty responsibilities include teaching, technical direction, program and school-level service, and academic mentoring.
The School of the Arts at Northern Kentucky University offers a wide array of degree programs in the visual and performing arts. The Theatre & Dance Program within the School of the Arts offers the B.F.A. in Theatre Performance with tracks in Acting, Musical Theatre, Dance Performance, Dance Pedagogy, and Playwrighting, a B.F.A. in Theatrical Design and Technology with tracks in Theatrical Design and Technology or Stage Management. The program produces two or three musicals, two or three plays, and one dance concert annually for a total of six mainstage productions. Season extras include a First Year Student Showcase, and student produced productions in the studio theatre, including the annual Emerging Choreographer's Showcase. Primary Responsibilities |
- Teach one to two courses per semester including Introduction to Stagecraft, supervise production credit courses each semester, and oversee technical aspects of all productions.
- Safely execute and assist in the construction of all Theatre & Dance program's mainstage productions which may include but not limited to drafting, carpentry, welding, rigging, special FX.
- Train students and other volunteers working in the scene shop in the fundamentals of constructions and proper tool safety.
- Prioritize and ensure safe working conditions that align with industry standards and maintain The Patricia A. Corbett Theatre & Robert and Rosemary Stauss Theatre.
- Effectively collaborate with Scene Shop Coordinator to determine a weekly, monthly, semester, and yearlong calendar which includes:
- Budget estimates
- Build and tech schedules
- Purchasing necessary materials following university policies
- Load-in, strike, and the execution of tech week
- Reconcile monthly purchases.
- Consult and work collaboratively with the creative and production team.
- Mentor students within the design, technology, and stage management degree
- Participate in active recruiting of future students for the program.
- Engage in twice yearly BFA Program student admissions interviews.
- Participate in BFA Design and Technology Program Yearly Student Evaluations.
- Work with Design and Technology Faculty on curriculum adjustments to maintain industry standards.
- Engage in professional development to improve policies and procedures

Qualifications |
Applicants should possess a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Theatre Design and/or Technology. Candidates with an
MFA in related fields or a minimum of a bachelor's degree (or equivalent, as determined by factors such as work experience, publications, and national or regional reputation in the field) will be considered. Successful teaching as a technical director is preferred. Other qualifications include but not limited to:
- Knowledge and proficiency in drafting software
- Demonstrate ability to effectively manage multiple tasks during a consistently high demand and deadlines-driven production schedule
- Proficient with Microsoft 365
- Current driver license
- Ability to lift over 50 pounds
- Comfortable with Genie lift and ladder work
