Neurovascular Senior Sonographer

Scope of Position

Under the direction of the Neurovascular Medical director and Lab manager, the lead sonographer will perform ultrasound studies specific to the intracranial and extracranial cerebrovascular anatomy (carotid duplex exam, duplex exam of the vertebral arteries, and a wide variety of Transcranial Doppler imaging exams to assess the cerebral vascular circulation).

Position Summary

The lead technologist will perform Transcranial Doppler studies, patient education, quality assessment activities for the lab. The technologist will also serve as a lead mentor/educator to other sonographers, students, technologists, staff physicians, fellows, and residents to enhance quality; Assists with on-going quality assurance/quality improvement initiatives; Follows imaging protocols and maintains standards for quality. Maintains patient safety. Performs ultrasound studies (e.g. Carotid duplex examinations, vertebral artery duplex examinations, Transcranial Doppler examinations). Consults with referring physician regarding patient's medical history and selection of appropriate procedures and equipment required for proper diagnosis; reviews charts, previous reports and requisition prior to exam. Prepares patient for examination and explains the procedure before and while performing studies; assists patient on and off exam table and with dressing/undressing as required. Maintains records of all examinations performed and completes billing for each study; obtains previous studies needed for correlation or as requested by the Neurologist - Neuroradiologist. Performs checks on ultrasound equipment to assure proper function of equipment and notifies clinical engineering of any equipment malfunctions. Schedules all emergency patients for neurovascular examinations. Monitors all appointments and determines priority of patients based on the daily schedules. Leads and organizes clinical instruction of ultrasound students and residents; as well as in-service education of staff members. Responsible for leading orientation of new employees to the equipment, department procedures and scanning protocols; provides demonstration of ultrasound equipment for staff and visitors. Responsible for leading of any new techniques, procedures and equipment; maintains state-of-the-art knowledge in the field through self-motivated education and attendance at appropriate conferences and symposiums. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements
Associate's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Completion of an accredited Vascular Sonography program., Registered Vascular Technologist or Registered Vascular Specialist from the American Registry of Diagnostic Sonographers, American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or Cardiovascular Credentialing International Registry. 1 year of relevant experience required. 2-4 years of relevant experience preferred.
