Description of primary duties and responsibilities:
Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:
The Broadwell College of Business and Economics is dedicated to providing a quality business education to a diverse student population. The College prepares students to meet the challenges of a changing environment and to compete in a global market. This is accomplished by supplementing the University's strong teaching emphasis with research and a curriculum that reflects changing market conditions. The College also assists in regional economic transformation by promoting entrepreneurial and economic education.
Primary Purpose of the Position:
This academic advisor position will provide full time advising support for students in the Broadwell College of Business and Economics. This will increase student access to academic advising and increase faculty time
Description of Work Continued:
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve as initial point of contact for any student who declares their major within the advisor's department.
Respond to inquiries from prospective students and majors via email, phone, in-person, or campus visitations.
Assist students with the declaration of major process, including providing advice to those who are unable to declare their major due to their GPA or other issues.
Process declarations of major, enter the appropriate information into Banner, including the assignment of a faculty mentor and notifying the appropriate faculty mentor and department chair of any new majors.
Review transcripts, certifications, or other official forms identifying approved academic credit and evaluate the course equivalencies for the university core curriculum and the degree program.
Develop an academic degree plan for each student which provides a clear path to earning a degree in their chosen major.
Provide guidance to any online majors to assist them in understanding online degree completion programs and with the process of completing necessary lower-level courses at other institutions.
Create and maintain a student folder for each student which contains all appropriate documents and advising records. Provide on-going academic advising for each student in the major, which includes:
Assisting the student with the selection of their courses each semester and providing them with their Alternative PINS once they have been properly advised.
Completing appropriate student paperwork, such as requests for course waivers/substitutions, course overloads, permission to take courses at other institutions, course repeats, etc.
Monitoring the progress of majors toward graduation and intervening with majors to encourage registration, appropriate course selection, use of available academic support and other resources, timely application for graduation, etc.
Complete the process of clearing students for graduation.
Provide guidance to students experiencing academic difficulty or other problems:
Create a success plan for each student in academic difficulty.
Assist students with making contacts with faculty as needed for help or advice.
Assist students with making the appropriate contacts or providing referrals to appropriate offices such as Financial Aid or the Center for Personal Development.
Monitor and document the progress of students in academic difficulty.
Advise and assist students who wish to withdraw from a course or from the university.
Act as a liaison between the department and students, as well as other appropriate units within the university, such as Admissions, the Registrar, Catalog Officer, etc.
Attend all department meetings to provide information and support to the department in the areas of academic advising, student concerns, and potential course scheduling, curriculum, or catalog issues.
Attend academic advisor meetings and report back to appropriate units.
Work with the Registrar and other appropriate units to stay current on advising policies and curriculum issues.
Serve on departmental and university committees as assigned.
Additional potential duties listed below:
Maintain records on majors and on advisor interactions with majors using appropriate software.
Provide reports on majors, cohorts, and other advising or enrollment issues as requested.
Participate in programs designed to recruit and retain students and majors, such as the Fall Preview, Spring Open House, Majors Fair, First Steps, and Return2FSU.
Maintain records of contacts at these events.
Follow up with potential students and majors to encourage them to apply. Develop departmental advising materials, such as curriculum guides and newsletters, as needed.
Engage in any other academic advising related activities assigned by the Department Chair.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree required. Prefer a degree in social sciences, counseling or related fields.
  • A minimum of two years of advising, recruitment, counseling, coaching or tutoring experience.
  • Two years of proven experience working with adult learners preferred.


Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:

  • Must be able to relate to low-income/potential first generation students
  • Ability to follow directions to implement evidence-based program
  • Excellent organizational skills to document services accurately
  • Meet deadlines; effective interpersonal and oral communication skills
  • An interest in working with adult learners.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years of advising, recruitment, counseling, coaching or tutoring experience.
  • Three years of proven experience working with adult learners preferred.
